also as far as diesel goes there is always bio-diesel
Really?
So you think any gasoline engined 5-series can beat a Prius hybird mpg then? Hmmm, interesting, please do elaborate.
That's funny, but the numbers don't look like your right but maybe you can find where "any" gas powered 5-series can best the Prius' mpg numbers from the charts below.

so as you can see to ignorantly just throw out a "5 series is a 5 series" into the mix just sounds....well ignorant. The 5 series that beat the Prius is NOT "just" a 5 series. Because as you can see from the info i posted (and I assume you read the article) no regular Gas powered 5-series can even touch the Prius in mpg or in range of miles per tank. So for the diesel model to pull that off without ANY hybrid technology is both big and great news...Hence why it was news worthy. And hence why the title of this post is very misleading. A regular 5-Series did not beat a Prius, a BMW 520d with a 2.0-liter diesel did.
And that test was all highway driving, If that test was all city/neighborhood driving the test would be dramatically different. Anyone that knows anything about diesels knows their mpg's really shine on the highway. And the Prius' "hybrid" technology only works for local driving, not highway driving...that's all motor.
I say it's awesome that BMW can make an awesome car that gets amazing mpg's. And an educated consumer would know that both cars have their strong points. BMW for a lot of distance traveling, Prius for local/city driving.
It's like pitting a Mustang against a Miata. The Mustang can accelerate, and the Miata can turn. Depending on what's more important to you is how you determine which is best. Either way even the article is basically just an opinion not fact, to truly prove the BMW is the best of the two they'd need to drive them both through local and city traffic.
You're calling another person ignorant and yet you posted the old EPA ratings for the Prius. The Prius gets NO WHERE near 60 mpg's, it get's about 40 at best IF you drive the speed limit at all/most times. Don't believe me than look it up.
