meh, prius is way over rated.

my 98 corolla with auto tranny and 120k miles used to get 36-38mpg on the highway.

Another example of Green marketing gone bad.

There is just too much money being made in the name of green.

Ban the drive-through fast food and @!#$ty coffee joint. Save some fuel.

A hybrid runs like a regular car on the highway, because it's not getting any assistance from the electric motor, so it's not unreasonable that it gets beaten. But I've argued all along that there are better ways to save fuel than hybrids. Hybrids are good for taxi cabs and city buses, but there's hardly a benifate for the average consumer.

Instead of buying a Prius, you could buy a Corolla 1.8L 5spd, get excellent gas mileage, have way better acceleration, and not have to drive a freak car. In MB, you get the same government rebates for buying a Corolla 5spd as you do for buying a Prius.

Basically my point is that if you want a fuel efficient car, than you can't expect to have a large heavy car, with quick acceleration.
eg. My parents selling their Sebring 2.7L V6 and buying a larger, heavier Buick Allure with a 3.8L V6 and complaining that it burns alot more gas for some reason (just like I told them it would). Yes, efficiency has increased in larger cars, but you can't have it all.

That is impressive mileage on that BMW though.

Re: bmw 5 series beats a prius in MPG

i never got the whole hybrid craze... i've gotten 35-40 mpg highway regularly before i started modding my cav. if it was possible with 1996 technology, why the HELL are we not at like 60+?

I don't get why the BMW has regenerative braking. does it shut off the alternator while you're slowing down, so there's less drag on the engine? other than that, there's no real hybrid features. that's good old-fashioned badass diesel power for ya. too bad the ass-pirate oil companies have priced diesel out of this world. gotta make a (billion) dollar(s) somehow, might as well hike the price up on the fuel that you should be trying to promote more use of.

I remember when I was in highschool, gas was between 45 and 51 cents per litre. My Neon didn't even take $20 worth of gas. That was only 7 years ago.
Re: bmw 5 series beats a prius in MPG

at 24 years old, the lowest i've ever seen gas prices was 94 cents. it was awesome!

Re: bmw 5 series beats a prius in MPG

um, a BMW 5-series did not beat a Prius.

a 5-series PZEV Diesel did. there is a big difference between a regular 5-series and the diesel version there genius. But it was a brave attempt at wording your title out of context to better server your baseless point..
And FYI, the Prius still wins because as Brown Eye pointed out diesel fuel is a lot more expensive that regular unleaded gas. So any MPG economy you get is over-shadowed by the higher cost to fuel the car.

Still very good on BMW's part, just shows that diesel technology has never been fully tapped yet. There's so much more that can be done. But with the fuel as high as it is it's just not worth it anymore.

Diesel is priced the same, if not lower, than gasoline up here in Igloo-land. To get 30-50% more distance on a tank compared to regular gas, plus have mammoth torque at such low RPMs, I'd do a diesel in an instant. They're huge in Europe...but then again so is the manual trans there, it's going the way of the dodo bird here. Everyone wants the kitschy useless "paddle-shifted" automatics...don't even get me started on those!

Re: bmw 5 series beats a prius in MPG

I was thinking...wouldn't continually variable transmissions be better paired with a diesel engines than gas? Since they have so much low end torque the CVT could keep the diesel engine in its sweet spot at low RPMs instead of a gas engine revving up way high and making all sorts of noise and vibration. I personally don't like CVTs at all anyway, but just a thought.

also as far as diesel goes there is always bio-diesel

consider yourself lucky. diesel used to be cheaper than 87 not more than a few years ago. now, they decided that since it's becoming more popular, they can jack the hell out of the price and people can't do a damn thing about it. same thing with E85, it's actually the same price for 87 as it is for E85. for 15% gasoline and 85% rubbing alcohol? AND you get worse gas mileage? yeah, sounds good to me

Really?
So you think any gasoline engined 5-series can beat a Prius hybird mpg then? Hmmm, interesting, please do elaborate.
That's funny, but the numbers don't look like your right but maybe you can find where "any" gas powered 5-series can best the Prius' mpg numbers from the charts below.

so as you can see to ignorantly just throw out a "5 series is a 5 series" into the mix just sounds....well ignorant. The 5 series that beat the Prius is NOT "just" a 5 series. Because as you can see from the info i posted (and I assume you read the article) no regular Gas powered 5-series can even touch the Prius in mpg or in range of miles per tank. So for the diesel model to pull that off without ANY hybrid technology is both big and great news...Hence why it was news worthy. And hence why the title of this post is very misleading. A regular 5-Series did not beat a Prius, a BMW 520d with a 2.0-liter diesel did.
And that test was all highway driving, If that test was all city/neighborhood driving the test would be dramatically different. Anyone that knows anything about diesels knows their mpg's really shine on the highway. And the Prius' "hybrid" technology only works for local driving, not highway driving...that's all motor.

I say it's awesome that BMW can make an awesome car that gets amazing mpg's. And an educated consumer would know that both cars have their strong points. BMW for a lot of distance traveling, Prius for local/city driving.

It's like pitting a Mustang against a Miata. The Mustang can accelerate, and the Miata can turn. Depending on what's more important to you is how you determine which is best. Either way even the article is basically just an opinion not fact, to truly prove the BMW is the best of the two they'd need to drive them both through local and city traffic.

Isn't diesel far cheaper to refine? Sounds like were getting the shaft by having to pay for robust engines to run the fuel that makes them more cake. And we'll pay more for food because of Biodiesel. Hmm. Sounds like a plan.

I have yet to drive an inspiring diesel car. The duromax, well that's another story. I'd love one, but it's a 10,000 dollar option. How can anyone say that diesel is clean? The @!#$ burns your eyes. At least any diesel I've been around.

Weight differences mean little on the highway. It's stop and go where heavy is an issue. I know, I have a Suburban.

I didn't realise the bimmer was a hybrid aswell. I am a little confused as to it's technology though. I'll have to read more about it.

jooky its still a 5 series bmw , if your not happy with that , call and bitch out BMW , they are the 1's that give it the 5 series model number , not me

yes bmw powers them with alot of different motors , but they are all still classified as 5 series , just like benz gets the same labels for their cars , not to menton your arguing over stupid @!#$ , when you know its still a 5 series , no matter what motor bmw puts in it
