i figure if someone can make a clear lens for a headlight then a clear lens for the dome light should be able to be done

Clear lens for the headlight is a bit easier in terms of design. The dome light has those little tabs that would need to be figured out. Headlight lenses, as far as I can see, don't.

the done light in the 96 Z24 ( not sure what other years/models had this) has a 3 bulb dome light with a white and chrome(not real chrome just reflective like headlights) housing
. it has 2 bulbs for the front ( passenger and driver) and 1 for the back.. it also has 2 buttons mounted on the roof...one controls the passenger reading light..the other controls the driver side reading light

i painted the housing and left the chrome ...it looks nice as it is...i think it would look awesome with a clear lens on it

no im gonna make it clear by fabricating a whole new piece.... i thought about it today and im just going to make my own out of lexan....ill post pics when its done.....its gonna take alot of heating up the lexan on the oven...and ill probably ruin a few pieces before i get it to do what i want it to

If you want to make a clear lens, I can.

Here's the way i go about it. Its a little more work, but very hard to screw up.

Get 2 pieces of a HARD wood, with no resins, paint, or stains on it or in it.

Shape those pieces to the same contours of your stock lens. 1 piece for the inner design of the lens, the other for the top of the lens.

The more accurate you make these, the better the finished product. So if you want some sort of design to them, now would be the best time to incorporate it.

After your all set on how you want it, Make sure its sanded smooth, and i mean very smooth, so you wont get wood grain grooves in the plastic. Put a thin, even layer of Lard on both peices. This will you remove the blocks when your done

Now for the heat and press:

Get your 2 blocks and sheet or your choice of plastic. I usually use optix Acrylic, 1/8th inch thick. Make sure to pull the paper protective sheet before heating up.

Now if you dont have a press and heat pad, You can use a heat gun and a few cinder blocks, a flat cement floor, and a heavy person.

Place the lower block of wood on the flat ground, Carved shape facing up. Now place a piece of plastic on top and start heating it up slowly with a heat gun. The more even the heat, and the slower you go, less chance of color distortion and bubbles. When the plastic just starts to bend, Put the other block on top with the carved part facing down, onto the plastic. Keep heating it. A second person might be helpfull. Now start putting weight on to the blocks, slowly, not to much to quick. The more the plastic flows outward around the lower block, the better the overall piece will be. Its taking shape. When you get to a point where its at a thickness you want, stop adding weight, and lower the heat. That will prevent it from going farther. turn the heat off completely, and let it cool a bit. As soon as you can touch it, without burning your self, You can pull the blocks off both sides.

Let it cool off, clean up any residue, and drink a beer.
