if u can do it with gun it would b better cuz the paint and clear is more durable in my opinion but if u cant do it with a gun then rattle turns out good if its prepped right. and as far as the color goes if u use a air gun u can get the paint code and match it , if u use rattle u can get it close but not perfect, it all wat u want and how much work u want to put in to it.

if you really want to do it. use a hvlp gun, not a rattle can. and make sure the paint matches one of the biggest complaints i have with people who paint stuff is when they don't use the exact same color and it just looks off and cheapens the look.

I rattle canned mine, using good prep it has held up VERY well in the 2.5 years since I painted it.. The only place it's rubbing off is right under the radio where drink cups and such have rubbed on it quite a bit, just use lights coats and clear the hell out of it.. you can get a pretty good looking piece with good prep work and patience. Obviously if you have access to a gun, that is the proper way to go, but a rattle can job would look just as good.

As far as the color, I would color match it to other interior items if you have to pick. It will look off if you have different shades of red in there.

I have done the rattle can approch too. I am still in progress with my interior but I sanded it down to make it smooth and then hit it with a primer prior to using a metalic silver to give it that shine. Most of my dash (sunfire swap of course) is originally black and the silver makes a great accent.

Like most people on here would tell you, it all depends on what you want to do. Rattle cans are the easy way but if you have the money to do so, go HVLP.

Clear coat is your friend, it keeps the shiny look and protects it from fading, peeling, chipping.

First step when I started on my dash was, before anything CLEAN it with wax and grease remover

Second step..sand with 36 grit, once the texture is gone, go with 80 grit, then 180 grit, then 320.

After all that, I used some dupli-color raddle can 2K high build primer, and did 3 coats, then guide coated it, blocked with 400 grit, guide coated again and blocked with 800 grit, wet sanded on both of coarse, then depending on how it looks, either went on or sprayed a few more coats of primer and repeated...

After is it all good, CLEAN it with wax and grease remover

Now, your ready to spray your base (color) coat. I used dupli-color truck & SUV paint, used 3-4 coats

Next step was clear coat...I used dulpli-color truck & SUV clear coat as well, and cleared the hell out of it...i cant remember exactly, but I know there were at least like 10 coats of clear on each piece. I reccommend for proper adhesion of the clear to color sand it between each 3 coats of clear (Just a suggestion, someone correct me if I am wrong, but I beleive it is needed with automotive paint as well out of an HVLP gun past 3 or 4 coats)

Last would be color sanding/buffing if needed....

Hope this helps! I can try to get pics if you would like..just all depends on if I can get a camera or not.
