whats that all about???

Just for now I cut my stock muffler off until I get my new exhaust set-up. I plan on going with the 4-1 header, 2 .25 piping. I've had several people ask me, "wheres the(exhaust) leak at?" I tell them that I just cut the muffler off until I get my new exhaust. They tell me that i am risking burning my valves and that theres suppose to be a certain amout of resistance. Whats that all about?? I don't post on here to often. I just read and learn. Theres alot of good info. here!! Oh..and these people that are asking me about the leak, there suppose to be pretty decent machanics. preciate any help!!!

Your valves will be fine, they know not of what they speak. YOU however may not be, you do know that breathing in all those exhaust fumes are bad for you right ? Think brain damage or death. The exhaust NEEDS to be vented from outside the underneath of the cars passenger compartment for safty reasons. Look if you like open exhaust thats fine just stick a piece of straight pipe on the end and run it to the bumper.

Getting any headaches lately? Carbon Monoxide will do that to do.

Be careful.

actually that can happen. but i ve only heard of it happening in cold weather. When the valves cool down too fast after the engine stops running. However i would not worry about it happening in the summer.

I would imagine that since he said he just cut off the muffler that he did that at the rear of the car and not right under himself. Just a guess though.

Cutting the muffler off isn't going to hurt much.......

except, maybe your ears.

True the muffler is after the rear axle so how could carbon monoxide possibly get to the passenger compartment is what your thinking right ?

Heres the answer. Carbon monoxide is a lighter then air very thin gas so that means as hes sitting stopped at a red light the carbon monoxide is rising up and forming a pocket under the trunk pan. Now we all know about that little flap in the passenger side of the trunk compartment and so does the carbon monoxide and ANY hole that is not 100% air tight it can enter. Now I don't know about your cars but all the J's that I've seen have fold down seats in the rear so heres how it goes. Hes in stop and go heavy traffic, maybe an accident on the highway, its hot as hell and he has the windows up tight and the A/C kicking. But thats just not cutting it so he flips to max A/C in which the car recirculats the cabin air to cool it as much as possible. The exhaust fills up underneath the trunk everytime he stops the car and starts to fill the trunk with carbon monoxide.
How long do you suppose it will be before it starts to enter through the cracks around the back seat? And then hes breathing it in.

Its not a streach for the imagination it happens all the time and it can be very dangorous.

Like I said BE CAREFUL.

Your logic makes 0 sense. Your facts are all 100% correct but the fact your missing is that the MUFFLER does NOTHING to reduce the Carbon Monoxide coming out the tailpipe. Sorry man but it's a fact. Your gonna get just as much carbon monoxide with the muffler off as with the muffler on....it'll just be louder now. Good job on the massive amounts of facts though....you just used them wrong

By cutting he muffler off he shortens the exhaust pipe from exiting just after the bumper to exit just under the trunk. I'd say about a foot difference in where the exhaust exits.

And at the velocity it is being forced out it goes flying past the trunk. Yes A LITTLE might get in but as soon as he starts moving and air enters the windows and gets flung to the back the carbon monoxide will be dissipated.

lol wow thsi is funny.... but i agree with hypsy here... there is no problem, its not like he has a hose going into his car from his exhaust but if he does... now he has a problem

lol..... no hose going inside. but heres another quick question, how do I explain to them that its not gonna burn my valves up? like I said b4, I dont post on here to often, I just read and learn. preciate the help!!!!

Hyspy, in his first post he said he cut the muffler off. That would mean no the exhaust gases are not anywhere near the bumper but are in fact up by the rear axle. And if you had read what I posted you'd see that I clearly said in stop and go traffic not at highway speeds. It is an issue and in fact its why car exhaust in the state of Maryland must exit the car behind the passenger compartment so no carbon monoxide poisoning can occur.

04ps, in answer to your question about burnt valves the answer is no because you still have a cat and some piping. Burnt valves occur when runnig open header or headers like on a V-8. What happens is the exhaust veloocity is so that the valves can not cool themselves down enough and they start to melt, just the outside edges.
Then the clylinder can not seal itself properly and you lose lots of power. Basicly your no worse off then running one of the straight thru mufflers. Other then the carbon monoxide stuff I was saying.
