If you don't wan't to run into water pump problems, get a 1998 and under Porche 911 or a classic VW Beatle.

It's not so much that the Water Pumps are bad, admittedly they aren't the best design, but the bigger problem is where it is located and that it involves removing the head on a LD9 to replace which makes it seem like a much bigger problem then it is because you have a $800 repair bill.

Yeah not fun to do the water pumps on the 2.4's. It's almost easier to pull the engine out do it then put it back in. At least then you have some kinda room to work with.

my father in law replaced mine with pretty much no problem. And the head doesn't have to be removed.

You must not have 2.4L engine if you didn't have to remove the head.

The two 2.4's here haven't needed to have them replaced. A '99 with about 85,000 & a '01 with about 90,000. I read on here all the time that they're suposed to be crap and always go bad, but that just hasn't been the case here.

I believe the premature water pump problems with the 2.4L's were solved in either 99 or 00.

Can anyone confirm that?

You can do preventive maintenance and change the fluids every 1 or 2 years on water-cooled cars. So you remove any water-pump destroying deposits and use distilled water as it does not have calcium in it.
Hey, it is under $10 you'd spend every 1-2 years vs. $XXX + headaches in repairing the water pump. Do the math.

Yea, the problem is not that they are hard to replace, but you basically have to remove the whole engine to get to it. And if you have a shop do it its not cheap. Might as well have them check the head and some other @!#$ while they have everything out. Will be cheaper in the long run.

I had mine replaced over a year ago. The head is not removed. The timing chain cover is removed. The head is left in place. Yes, I do own a 2.4L.

I have 103,000 miles on my 2.4L. The water pump is original and I just replaced my DexCool at 100,000 miles.

I expect it will go bad at some point, don't know when.

None of the manuals I have read say that the head has to come off. Only the timing chain cover.

I have no plans to do it myself. I'll call my dealer and my favorite mechanic and do a cost comparison when the time comes.

Head stays on.....take it from me I've fixed this , the timing cover comes off but not the head thank fully if it did you'd need a new head gasket too whoever informed you the head comes off has their head up their ass.

I've put two in on my 96 Z not really that bad if you know what you are doing, but still a full days work. One at 100,000 and one at 170,000

Gm calls the water pump replacement a 6 hour job according to a friend of mine...

Do the math if you take it to a dealer.

Where did you hear such nonsense?

& I own 2 of them. The HEAD DOES NOT have to come off.

Add my name to the list...

My 2.4 hit 130,000 miles last week and the water pump began weeping. I'll dig into it next month.

I appreciate those who commented from their experience. Thanks.
