I have a 99 Z24. It currently has a ld9 from a 97 GA. I still have my stock motor in the garage, has bad timing chain guides.
I recently sold my Talon TSi AWD and am starting to crave boost again...
Im debating on what I want to do engine wise.
My options include:
1.) rebuild orig ld9 with forged internals, add turbo or s/c
2.) stroke ld9 to 2.6 with forged internals and turbo or s/c
3.) scrap both ld9s and swap in a 3800 with a m90(if it fits).
The car is a daily driver but needs to be fast as well.
Ive been doing some research but still not sure what to do, the motor in the car runs great so Im in no rush to decide.
I will probably be ditching the isuzu transmission at the same time and put a NVG in it.
Thanks in advance for the help and opinions,
Thomas

Out of those 3 I would go with number one....
although Ide put a set of cams in there and prob port and polish the head since I had it tore apart anyway...
Scrap the J-body, buy a car with a more capable engine and drivetrain setup. Seriously.
For the money you'll spend, you'll kick yourself later.

Slowly but surely may some day win this race...

well since you cant stroke an ld9 to a 2.6 i guess that only leaves 2 options

Been there, done that...
My talon was an 11 sec daily drivable car. Pushing close to 500 awhp.
Im not looking to build another monster, just have another fast daily.

Actually there have been a 2.6 stroker made out of hybrid 2.3 and 2.4 parts. Not worth it but done.
I accidentally the SHIFT LIGHT!!!!!!!!!!
The proper way of using the word seen. It is not I seen it that would be I saw it. He has seen the car is the right way to use the word. English class is Cool. By the way thats my sig

I would rebuild your other motor with forged internals. Have the head ported and throw a set of cams in there. From there you could throw a turbo or a blower on there and be good to go. The GM supercharger kit would probably be the best if you are wanting to have a reliable daily driver. Not that turbos can't be reliable but it will take a little more up keep and tinkering. You will have great low end torque and still get good gas mileage. If you will want to go bigger with it in the future and bump up the boost then go turbo. The 3800 swap will cost alot of time and money and if it is your daily the car will be down too long. You can get plenty fast with the 2.4. Either way, good luck.
I have the opportunity to pick up a rebuilt (by a reputible shop) m62. I know its a little larger than the m45 but is it harder to tune than it as well? Im not that knowledgeable about superchargers, have always been a turbo guy.
I have have a mhi 16g turbo left from one of my old setups on the Talon but figured it may be a little small for the 2.4. I would like to make it as painless as possible for tuning. I dont want to have to play with it everyday to get it to run right on the street, that was my reason for getting rid of the Talon.
I have intercoolers and piping, so thats not an issue.
Im going to keep my eye out for a set of brown top injetors but Im not sure if they are right for the car.
Ive read that 99 has different injectors then 95-98, is this true? I assume the difference is low and high impedence? If so, is a resister box all that is needed?
Thanks for the help,
Thomas

actually..the engine you speak of was made from an LGO..he said LD9 , which isnt possible to do.
and you say its not worth it ? can you show me another Jbody with more NA 4cyl hp ?

Anything is possible. The 2.0 in my Talon was stroked to a 2.3. Custom length rods, custom height pistons and bored just right.....
Shouldnt take too much to do on a ld9. 0.010" shorter pistons and 0.040" larger diamter pistons should be sufficient to make a 2.6.

rods and pistons are not enough..in order to STROKE an engine you have to INCREASE THE STROKE..that means you have to change the CRANK with one that has a longer stroke
there are no cranks for the LD9 that have a longer stroke, period
and no, boring an LD9 out .040 will not make it a 2.6 either..youll have to bore out alot more than that
so just stick with boost and youll be fine

exactly what i was going to say. piston height has nothing to do with stroke.
87 Firebird
All stock...........lol.
You can stroke with different rods and pistons but in order for it to actually be stroked that way the crank must be offset ground. My machinist races boats for a living and he told me all about it. THAT BEING SAID it would cost an assload of money for the custom rods. 2.4 crank 2.3 block ftw!
