Conservatism is the new Punk
Thursday, July 26, 2007 9:06 AM on j-body.org
Remember when wearing orange hair would get you beaten up? When a guy wearing an earring would have labelled him a homo? Remember when little old ladies crossed the streets if you were wearing a devil shirt?

Those days are long gone.

Now with all the fashion boutiques catering to various *ahem* rebels, it's just no fun anymore. So may I suggest bringing back redneckism and conservatism to tick off your parents and the population at large.

Seriously though, punk's dead. It just doesn't make anyone mad anymore to say "I'm an ANARCHIST!!!!!!!" and do the devil sign. So instead, just say "God bless George Bush!" or "Dick Cheney is a great man." and watch people have epileptic fits. Instead of a mohawk, wear a mullet. Instead of tight leather pants, wear a cowboy hat. Instead of facial piercings, wear a handlebar mustache.

Instead of wearing a T-shirt with Che Gueverra on it, wear a T-shirt that says "Kill for Peace/War Forever".

I'll say one thing, I may not agree with a lot of Conservatism thinking (especially the religious stuff), but it's a lot more ballsy to be a Con than a Punk nowadays.

So whatcha say kids?

You speak the truth.

Harleys, Tattoos, piercing...not very rebellious anymore. When you want to be a rebel, like everyone else, you're not very individualistic.

the "popular punk" is nowhere near what punk used to be. it's just a watered down version, marked up in price and sold at department stores to people who think they are being trendy.

if you're truely a punk, stick to your guns. their fad will run its course and they will be on to another fashion style soon enough. hell, maybe soon the popular thing will be redneckism, and you can be happy with your punk style yet again.

Until "modern" punk can come up with such good lyrics as "I raped your mother today but it doesn't matter much to me as long as she's spread" or "President's bullet-riddled body in the street (Ride Johnny Ride) Kennedy's shattered head hits concrete", it's not going to be even close to what original punk was.

Until conservatism can have some profound lyrics (and no, the Fabulous Thunderbirds don't count) along those lines, it could never even be seen as punk or counter-culture.

Besides, you have the Blackmetal hordes in europe burning down churches, and the deathmetal guys talking about throwing little girls out of windows and feeding corpses to chipper-shredders. "Sweet Home Alabama" doesn't have that kind of heavyness.

Conservatism is noun. The whacko-greed-bent-loose-cannon type stuff that's been going on has been the uptight asshole, Goldwater-era Republican's wet dream.

Greed... that's this administration's hallmark

x2.
part of the ethos of being "punk" is doing what you want, regardless of the status quo. to change what you do "just to be different "(or punk), in fact, makes you more a part of this mindless mass movement of individualism than by riding the wave out.

William Henry Harrison FTW!!!!!!1FD Roosevelt... can't say the New Deal was a greedy or power hungry thing when it lifted 80% of poor & working class citizens into the middle-class and literacy and sanitary conditions... I suppose that you could also say that Ike Eisenhower's administration wasn't as hungry for power as Truman's was even though the Marshall Plan was enacted under Truman to help Europe (in general) get back on its feet and stand up to Communism.

The new deal was solely created to a) stop the rise of Communism in America and b) stem to tide of rampant crime that resulted from poverty. The 20's and 30's were actually MORE violent than the 80's. So it wasn't all in the interest of the public so much as to try and keep the entire country from devolving into revolution and anarchy.

New deal was meant to pull the US out of the great depression(1933), and prepare for war (1937). Poverty was definitely part of it, because of the dust bowl years, It was called a communist ploy from the political right, and tantamount to fascism from those on the left. Either way, it worked, and is still working.... even if Dubya, Nixon, Reagan and LBJ tried to dismantle it.

As far as what constitutes punk now: a flagrant and pervasive disregard for the norm which in large groups constitutes a new norm, self-centeredness, and the will to piss people off strictly to amuse yourself... That's it.

Real Punks would rather freedom and self-expression.

^^
Very true...I dislike what is considered punk by modern standards...

It's just a bunch of whiney teenagers complaining about no one understanding them and how they attempt to rebel against the current administration by listening to what some other, slightly older whiney teenagers, or some washed up "punk" bands who really have no idea of modern politics or political systems...but its ok, because Green Day said so.

It's almost like the urge to have a unique identity relies solely on going against the current trends and not what you'd really want to be/actually are..

If you are confident in your style, tastes and choices that is your individuality regardless if it can fit into whatever trend. I listen to emo/screamo punk. I dress in related band shirts, ripped jeans, messy/spiked hair. I am I trying to prove anything? Uhh, no. I like the music I like because I just do. The same goes for my car, which created a lot of @!#$ when I posted my updates.

I'm not afraid if this watered-down-punk-is-oh-so-cool trend dies out. I also could care less if every 14 year old pop tart embraced the same 'style' as me because she saw it on MTV/Muchmusic It never affected my choices in what I listen to/wear/do anyways.

And just for the record, I get a lot of heat about being an 'emo' kid. Oh noes! Time to write in my blog about how the world won't accept me! Right. @!#$'em, I stand on my own two feet regardless.

Punk isn't what you wear, its how you feel.

I never was a fan of wearing other people's brand... I'd rather not wear what's popular, I'd rather wear what's functional and feels good.

F**k the rest of the world, I'll listen to what I want, wear what I want, think how I want, and treat people how I think they deserve to be treated. If that makes me a punk... then sofa king be it, Labels are just words that people use to subdivide themselves into greater/lesser strata.

Goth = Real punk ..... "DID YOU JUST CALL ME EMO??? I WILL GOUGE YOUR EYES OUT WITH A @!#$ RUSTY RAZOR YOU PREP ASS BITCHES!!!!!!!!!!!" <----- true story

Punk != Goth

Punk is an attitude first. You'd really rather learn and do it yourself, you'll dress the way you want and f**k what anyone else thinks, and you'd rather live by your wits and let the rest of the people that want to govern themselves in a circle-jerk do for themselves, and you do for yourself.

Conservative punks are posers, most punks are apolitical or support people that want what they want out of life... Supporting a party over self is an oxymoron in punk ideology.

You don't have to work in a factory, be white, enjoy Green Day the Ramones and the Sex Pistols, or wear Dickey's over Doc Marten's to be a punk. You just have to be true to yourself, and let the rest of the assholes label you whatever the f**k they want.

Emo has more roots in Punk than it has in Goth...at least music-wise.

Besdies, Emo would never be a ture countrercultuyre until it's blamed for causing some real hesrtburn for the estabishment--like shooting up schools or causing the "rational" people of the here and now to reinact the Salem Witch Trials for real. If a normal person meets up with a Goth or a punk, usually they have a slight fear that something bad will happen to them. If they meet an Emo, they worry that they will get blood on them from the Emo kids slashing his/her own wrists, and then subsequently give them, a swirlee.

Punk, to me is misfits and Burning Man... Music isn't the biggest part of it (I'm not a fan of punk music per se), it's the attitude first and foremost.
