nice...very nice
that is a very useful device. hope it makes it in service soon

(I can't see the videos, but I'm assuming it's the MDS aircraft mounted Lasers)
If that's the one that are being tested for the Missile Defence Shield, no, they're not making it to service anytime soon...
They have to be mounted on 747's and the aircraft have to be patrolling 24x7... figure 15-25 aircraft so cover the eastern seaboard, the same to cover the west, and about 10 to cover Alaska, and Hawaii together. The principle is that the air craft have to converge on the inbound missile and tune up the gas-powered laser and aim it precisely enough to puncture the fuselage.
It's not a bad idea... but really, it's not feasible, if it could be scaled down to a fighter/interceptor or pod size, great, but on a 747... no... too slow, not maneuverable enough.

GAM
Actually these are ground mounted ones that are being used for missle and artilary defense. They show demonstration vidoes of these in action however I believe they are still in the developmental predeployment phase. Its a pretty cool system really.
no GAM its a ground mounted laser the size of a big spotlight, like the one on the orginal batman movie, the one that gives the batsignal. its that size, in the vid it was shooting down artillery shells and medium sized missiles. it seems very practical and useful

Well they beet me to it Gam. the vid is deff cool. But I'm sure it would "dazzle" the enemy once again.
Semper Fi SAINT. May you rest in peace.
its a pretty nice system. The old one, that gam was talking about was really not that great, as it's shot capacity was something horribly low like 12 shots, and because of the amount of gas necessary to make the chemical laser it used fire it had to be mounted in a 747.
This one looks like much more robust and faster design.

Just as long as the Cylons don't get their mechanical hands on it!!!
This is probably something different than what I've seen... is it meant for Ground-Air? Ground to Ground?
If its high powered, I'm pretty sure it won't make it into inventory. I stated elsewhere that there's geneva conventions that prohibit that kind of thing.

Thanks

That was a commercial if I ever saw one.
All that was missing is "If your one of the first 1000 people to order we'll throw in this handy dandy kitchen death ray"
...i'd shine it at the moon until it ignited...
..stupid moon

Yes you are right, geared towards the military...... Most defense contractors make videos like this to showcase their items usefulness.
^^^ You should see the junk that gets peddled to Forensics units. UNbeLIEvable.
