Alright, I don't post often but I would like some opinions on this statement from Dub-yah:
"It is now clear that a challenge on this scale requires greater federal authority," he said, "and a broader role for the armed forces -- the institution of our government most capable of massive logistical operations on a moment's notice." President George Bush's national address from New Orleans.

What this says to me is that the worlds most powerful nation just wants more power and more control than ever before.
Isn't it convenient that with every disaster that has happened in America since George W Bush became President a speech with more Government control and a new job for the U.S military is written?
All the other crap he said about a "Gulf opportunity zone" are still just ideas that may or may not happen.
I mean come on, the largest natural disaster hit the U.S and the quest for ultimate power is even more prevalent!
If there is a third world war it will be everyone fighting to save Americans from their own government.

Notice he said 'Logistical' logistical is not tactical so the more prelavent role of the government, 'Shouldnt' be used for war only critical emergency situations. I.E. Katrina
Of course it will probably get twisted around by someone down the line to use for their advantage.

The military isn't supposed to start a war. The best fought wars are ones that are AVOIDED.

I understand what the speech was meant to say (more federal involvement to prevent miscomunication and the military getting more responsibility) but I read between the lines and saw that this can be used for the wrong purpose.
It just seems that Bush's answer for everything is more control and a military soloution.

The only thing I can say is where have you been? This did not start with George Bush. He is hardly the man in charge of bigger government. He is just another in a long list of leaders since the 1830's expanding the scope of the federal government. The nation has been on a downward decline since that time.

Keep me away from anyplace where I'm on the wrong side of a live fire range, that's no fun. I honestly wonder sometimes if I'm going to re-enlist again because of all the combat deployments. I haven't been with my current unit for 2 years yet and I'm already on the Roster to deploy again.

but one thing though....
to be the top nation of power, you have to keep gaining power to keep it that way.....
like any athlete will tell you, the minute you get lax and stop improving, your competitiors will take 1st place...

got that right, thats why i didn't reenlist.....this is what happened to my unit
commander- "were going to iraq for 6 months"
unit- "ok no biggie"
6months later
commander- "we've been extended for another 6 months"
unit- "well that bites, but ok, suck it up and drive on"
2 days from redeployment to the U.S.
commander- "great job on spending 96 hours nonstop cleaning all the equpment.....i know your all tired but i have some important news"
unit- "........uh oh"
commander- "guess where were going"
unit- "umm.....home"
commander- "ha ha ha you stupid asses, back to iraq of course"
unit- "aww man are you serious, this is BS"
commander- "don't aww man me......we have a job to do, and youve already been gone a year, whats another 3 months" (at this point he should be glad that we have turned in our ammunition)
then the army wonders why hardly anyone from the 1st armored division or the 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment reenlisted

I'm going to request orders to the Drill Field right before I deploy, spend a year in Iraq and then go to the Drill Field for 3 years. Then put in my Warrant Officer Package, so that right there is about 4 years of non-deploying, but it depends on how this deployment goes. I like the missions that I'm hearing scuttlebutt on, but it's still not official.

IIRC Tommy Franks asked for 300,000 troops on the ground in Iraq. I guess an extended deployment was a good idea.
