Am I the only one...

who thinks its ridiculous and always has been that the citizens dont get to choose who is in the Supreme court. For those who dont know the President gets to choose and the Supreme court is a life long position, so if you get chosen for it at age 45 you are there till you die or resign.

Anyways we elect everyone else, President, House of Reps, Senate, Congress, even country boards we get to choose. but we cant choose who we want to interpret the Constitution? These people are making decisions that effect your life, Roe vs. Wade back in the 70s, most recently they said anyone who kills under age 18 cant be executed, lots more decisions that you dont realize.

Like I was saying before the President gets to choose, so if he is right wing, he will choose right wingers, if he is left he choose left.

Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist is on his way out, his time is about to expire people are saying, and we are going to have some right wing in there, so it will be a 6-3 Republican majority. Furthermore 8 or the justives are older than 65 and four older than 70, so even more likly that a few of them may die before 2008.

Think the laws need to be changed so the people every four years can releect say 3 of the justices so it will be a 12 year office instead of life long.

Anyone agree/opinions?

I would think that you'd have a VERY tough time shoe-horning that issue through Congress and the Senate.

it would require a constitutional amendment to do that. Good luck getting 66% of the populace to vote on that.

Just so you know, the president just doesn't get to pick who ever he wants. Congress has the approve the nomination.

But judges are appointed to life long positions because they want them to be as corruption free as possible. They don't want them to be bias torwards any campign contribuitures or make certain desions when election time rolls around.

we dont elect everyone else either... the president appoints cabinet members the same way that he appoints supreme court justices.

The president also appoints thousands of positions every term.
Cabnets members, Ambassador , Program Directors, etc some of which never have to be aproved by congress.

on topic: keep em in office that way we get decision that start with

Yes, but we get a new cabinet every term, of aleast some of them.

These Supreme court judges, the next President cant change even if he wants to.

Secondly decisions his cabinet make dont effect the lives of the people as greatly as the Supreme Court decisions do.

All the better to reduce the amount of corruption as much possible.

Just a side little fact, you know they are not allowed to have any outside source of income what so ever.

Trust me, you don't want judges being elected, not Supreme Court Judges anyway. Do you have any idea how much corruption is involved in elections?

That would be the demise of your country (oh wait, that's happening anyway)

the two posters above me are 100% correct!

howver a judge can be impeached just as the president can...so if you truely believe a judge is corrupt or 100% wrong you can start a grass roots movement to get him impeached!

Aren't judges elected in some states anyhow? Not supreme court justices, just regular judges. They can't all have jobs by appointment.

GAM - Without doing any research, I think you're right. I've always been under the impression that most judges in the US are elected, not appointed, and I doubt I got that impression out of thin air.

That's one thing that the Canadian Justice System has going for it, judges are not ever elected! There really are no politics involved when it comes to judges. there might be the odd judge who gets involved in politics, but if it ever came to light, he/she would be in so much sh!t they would probably never hear a case again.

Judges here are appointed, definitely, but it's only with reccomendation by a committee. Supreme Court Justices are the exception, The PM has discretion over those appointments.

Judges here are pretty impartial because they can have their judicial powers stripped, but the last time that happened was when D'Arcy McGee was shot.
