Alright, ive been wondering for a while, why do people who "street raced" before the fast and the furious movies came out, hate them so much?
I mean, those movies got me interested in sport compact cars, and, well, i must say that the first was better than the second, and also, yes i bought the dvd.
ok now with that said, ive listened to the directors commentary, and, granted he could be lieing,(but why would he?), but he said that him and a bunch of his crew went out to auctual street races down in LA, and watched, so that they could get the movie as close as it could be to real.
and you gotta remember, he didnt make it a documentary, he mad a movie, with a plot and everything...
i dunno, i just kinda am offended by people when the blame a movie for all the 'noobs' for joining, but you gotta be at least a little thankful, i mean, it has brought cars that normally would just be used for daily drivers up to the state of race cars...
i guess im just ranting and rambling...what do you guys think?
It brought the wrong people into the scene. besdies, i'm against streetracing to begin with. if you want to race, race at the track.
^^^Agreed. Streetracing is stupid. Someone's going to get killed and they'll keep racing. And having a couple more idiots racing around makes things worse.
The problem I see is that while it did generate a lot more interest in Sport Compacts, it did do a few other things that were not good:
1. Glorified Street racing as cool and profitable.
2. Encouraged people to modify their cars improperly/unsafely
3. Made younger drivers that do not know their car's characteristics think they could race on the streets and never get caught or hurt.
4. Glorified certain models of cars and made "Turbo" a word that instantly made a car worth $14000 more... basically it ramped up the cost on a decent sporty import/domestic 4 banger into a price range that bucks their buyers (ie, 18-24 year olds) out of payment possibilities
Basically that, and that it is not even close to an accurate depiction of regular racing (ie, there is no handicapping, and there are rarely THAT many people at an illegal drag.. the first race it looked like there were over 250 cars and about 1000 people!
)

gam, there are street races here in southern california at night. 250 is attainable at certain locations. 500 depending on where you go, usually just outside county lines. 80 is kinda small, but is more like where I live. Thats just in Orange county south of LA county. This is the home of 4 cylinder imports. Theres no telling how big they are in LA which has almost 5 times as many people as orange does.
True, but LA IIRC also has about 10 times the cops.
I'm not talking about California per se, I mean like, Ohio, Nebraska... heck even like Mass. or Ontario (Toronto specifically).
Most of the times that I've seen a street race in TO, its been at most 30-40 people, and strangely enough, about 30-40 cars. It's not like someone brings along a DJ and a Laser light show along.. just cuz.
Also, I don't think it's THAT common to see an R33 Skyline in Viper Canary Yellow prowling the streets looking for action.
It's a decent movie IMHO, just not anything close to the truth. The problem occurs when kids are drawn to the sports illegal side, and kill other people and wreck property. If they want to kill themselves, why not just go the traditional routes: Drugs, Robberies, Suicide by Cop, or good old .357 magnum to the temple?

Yes that is true but most people don't relize that.
It also brought street racing and the tuner crowd more into the lime light with the cops. I remember watching TFATF and then sitting outside in my Mustang while all these kids peeled out in the parking lot. After every movie showing, more of these morons were born. The people that were into the underground racing and stuff didn't want the cops on them like they are today.
The tuner crowd was more of a shadow thing back in the day. It was group of people that got together to have fun where-ever they could. Now there's a new group. The public all over the streets I want to drive like I do in NFS2 and TFATF people. And unfort. the cops can't tell the diffrence.

Well, hoepfully they'll move on to their next abomination, like inspecting loaded gun barrels or verifying that Jet engines do indeed suck squeeze bang and blow behind the first fan by actually getting sucked into it.
It's the same with these people that think that White-Trash is the hip thing... IT SUUUUCKED!
And so do they by extension... If you feel the need to wear a mesh back hat for no other reason than it's the in thing to do, I'll help you into the Jet Intake... happily.

SNDS> The same explains the deterioration of the metal scene. Many who are metalheads know what "Pit Etiquette" is. most that don't belong don't.

Besides the fact that the movies promoted illegal street racing, brought more jerks on the car modding stage etc etc. The movies sucked! Whether or not you like the cars in them (I hated them) there's no acting no plot just the world's loudest and most obnoxious soundtrack thumping along.

I don't mind the films, I mean, they're movies, come on!!! I don't see people b!tching because you can't drive around in Durango 95's or anything, and can't time travel in a DeLorean(Unless you have a flux capacitor). They're made to entertain people, and they did their job well.
The thing I HATE though, is that the movies instantly made every other kid driving a Civic VX think that by slapping on a color changing 4" coconut launcher onto his car and adding a 2 foot hogh spoiler, that they have a race car. And all of a sudden, being able to chirp the tires into 2nd gear was an awesome sign of power. Please, my old Geo Metro that I modified could do that!!!

There's a lot of BS in the film. However, it did give people in the know (or even somewhat in the know) a BIG RED
Flag for when some of these kids start jaw-jacking.

up to the state of racecars?
ahhhh its a little bit harder then that.
i can think of like maybe 5 cars on this site i would actually think of referring to a racecar.

you see it did some bad things mentionedabove, but it did alos open the world of car modding to the eyes of somewhat normal people. I wasnt too into modding cars weheni saw the movie. instead of believeing what the movie said, it gave me the drive to ask around, and i got into a car club, where i learned real information, and such....so wehile it did bring a whole bunch of nuits to the scence i like to think it did create some normal people
just my .02$

wait wait wait... i KNOW I've seen you defend street racing before, saying things like if you do it on an empty street blah blah blah and the like it's OK.
Either way, your current position I like much better

that's when i was younger and stupid...but i've never said it's okay as long as the street is empty...maybe if you blocked off the road, etc, but even so, i'd rather have a computer tell me that i've won than a human observer.

the problem is not with the movies themselves but the hipster crowd...
the problem is that the youth of today have no moral examples to follow, so they see something that is "cool" they emulate it. This is why up here in Canada you have gangs of white kids warring with other white kids flashing signs and pulling guns on eachother, calling eachother the Nword, thinking that they live in the ghetto... I'm not kidding about that either, they honest to god think they need to act that way, and that they have to protect their street cred... and actually think that they have to be enemies with the people from the other ends of the city just because they are from the other ends of the city.
Having Served in the former Yugoslavia as a peace keeper I can tell you seeing these little pukes act that way makes me want to round them all up and drop them off somewhere where life really is like that for 24 hours, then maybe after they crap their pants maybe they'd smarten up... but most likely not.
The problem is that the youth of today are desperate for identity and these types of movies portray something that is illegal, destructive, unneccisary and incredibly stupid as "Cool" and these kids suck it up and believe this is how it's is and supposed to be and thus our culture crumbless a little more each day as these kids make their beliefs reality.
it's not that TFATF glorifies street racing and makes it seem as though throwing an intake and exhaust on your car makes in do 10s, it's that these kids believe that, and think that by throwing on an intake and fart can exhaust they become the elite and begin driving around like they are on a rally course, killing people and making those of us who are legitimately tuning our vehicles for the track or for better appearance targets to the police. Because of these ignorant ya hoos driving around thinking they are Dom, we are getting a bad rep for something we never did.
Basically every year society gets less and less intelligent, we are spiralling around the toilet any day now we're going down hard.
Monkey see, Monkey do.
I'll never forget when both movies came out. 2-3 cop cars waiting for the kids to leave.
After the first movie, there was street racing everywhere in my G/F town. Since then the cops look at everybody. Everytime a cop see a kid with a tip they stop him and give him a ticket. I got pulled over for an illegal exhaust system and the cop didn't even look at the damn exhaust. They pull everyone now. And there's alot more kids with civic here with a coffe can or a cone filter on the end of the OEM airbox thinking they can outrun everything.
It cost around 800$ here to have insurance for a 91-92 civic. I pay 400$ of insurance for my Gtz and I'm faster than the civic.
It piss me off seeing kids believing in the movie like if it was god saying to them that's it's great to street race. It's outrageous too. The drag strip where I go use to have around 40-50 mustang + some other muscle car. Now you have 1-2 mustang and like 50 civic running 17-18 sec. And the worst is that they look at a modify T/A or mustang like if it was a slow car.
If I could just punch a few of them I would feel already better. But at least the cop are trying to kill that kind of stupidity. They're waiting at the drg strip and look at the car for something illegal and they look at the kid and take info. If they see that the kid is acting like a @hole then they will stick to him.
I just couldn't believe how the region here lost their brain after looking at that movie.
You can't even take a nice summer ride with your G/F without having an @hole trying to race you.
Since we only have like 3 months of hot weather, I'd like to enjoy it but you always have a damn kid with is oil burning car doing stupid things. It make the cops crazy and they don't care about anybody anymore. They give a ticket, you pay or you go to court.

It's the same crap around where I live. All I have on my Cavalier is an intake and cat-back exhaust and it's lowered with wider tires (Toyos) but I still drive like a normal person on the road. What pisses me off is that these little asshats in their gh3y Civics fly down the roads bouncing with their cut stock springs doing like 90 weaving in and out of traffic, yet I'M the one getting pulled over just cause my car is two different colors right now (I seriously got pulled over one night by a cop cause he said he had reason to believe I stole the front end off of another car since my 04 front clip is white and the rest of my 99 Z24 is black). Plus the little Civic drivers get pissed off if I don't race them at a light so they go and try hassling me on the road (tailgating me, high beams when they're behind me, etc.).
I absolutely HATE TFATF and it's metrosexual cousin 2F2F. Those movies IMO single-handedly killed the entire racing world. It's all about the companies marketing to the younger generation and all just to make a dollar because it's the "in-thing" to do now. Hell, even McDonald's got into the whole "tuner scene" by having "a bunch of homies chilling on their tyte rides over a Big Mac". It's sad really. I was into the whole racing thing before TFATF came out and now everyone tells me that I'm a poser or some BS just cause I drive a modified car. If I ever meet the person who came up with the idea for making TFATF movies I will seriously kick the living crap out of them.

That's some high drama right there.
