I noticed the headlights on my 04 cavaleir ls sporthave clips around them for the lenses. I don't think those hold on the lenses. But I thought I'd ask.
Has anyone ever tried to take them apart that way?

The only safe way to take them apart is by putting them in the oven to heat up the adhesive and then pull them apart. If you try to pull them apart without heating them 9 out of 10 times you will end up cracking them. I only know of one person that took them apart without heating them successfully.

IMO it's easy to just heat them up and pull them apart so why not just do that.

Very simple and straightforward and can add a LOT to our cars
Those clips to hold the lens on, but that's only part of them
Heat them up (10 mins at 140), pry apart, clean old seal off, re-seal, and put back together

yeah, you have to remove the clips THEN heat them to break the seal.
