So I want to clean my engine bay, though I have never actually done it before. Some pointers on what to do/what not to do? I know you have to cover the alternator, battery, fuse panel, I'm assuming that the ECU should be covered also? (gonna relocate it eventually).
cover anything that shouldn't get wet, (i don't think you need to worry bout the ecu).
pressure wash that biatch. call it a day.
i've also heard lots of people say great things about simple green. never tried it myself.
i just always use a degreaser and soap.
Simple green is pure win.

get in there with a small sponge and a bucket of soapy water. your'e best friend is elbow grease.

Simple green works awesome! cleaned it yesterday and the difference is night and day. plus the smell reminds me of licorice.
Simple green and a wash mit, scrub brush, bucket of soap, lots of rags and elbow greese. I don't cover anything in the bay when I wash it, though I rarely use high pressure.
I blast everything (yes everything) with armor all and spend a lot of time wiping it all up and cleaning off the extra. Then I use rubbing compound on all the AC lines, and my mounts and carnuba wax on all the paint in the bay.

you can get away without covering anything? When I did it I covered the battery, alternator, removed the air intake and covered the oxy sensor wires and vacuum hose. I used low pressure and though it came out a lot cleaner, its a long way from looking like yours.
You dont have to cover everything if your arent using high pressure. Water gets into your engine bay when you drive in the rain. The things in there are waterproof enough. Its just the high pressure that will force water into where it doesnt belong.

Yup.
I don't cover a thing unless (in my dd) the air filter is exposed.
I also use Purple Power to do the cleaning and works great.
Once spayed clean with a garden hose or low pressure, I wipe down what I can, and let it air dry or have the hood open so the sun can dry the car faster.
Works great and never had an issue with electrical connections or hoses.

Simple green and water hose, but i put the hose at its highest pressue to blast away the grime. Works, and never cover anything so meh, it works. My bay is dirty again but ill try and post pics if I have them at home.
honestly oven cleaner... get the engine warmed up almost to normal temp then spray that stuff on and let it eat the grime off... then hose down... good as new
I use Simple Green. Just spray on, let soak for a couple minutes, high pressure wash. The only thing I've ever covered was my intake filter. I've done that quite a few times already, no problems at all.
I tried cleaning mine a few times, i gave up lol. I work in new subdivisions a lot, lots and lots of mud, and a lowered j-body with purely street tires, the only way through is to put the pedal to the metal lol. She gets a little dirty under the hood
I just pressure it sometimes, put a bag over my air filter, take some aluminum polish and clean up the intake pipe, some plastic cleaner on other parts, etc.
