It's coming off. How many others have Js with asstastic paintjobs from GM?
Troy its everyone. why even ask?
Well @!#$, no wonder GM went out of business
AtoBsunfail (Troy) wrote:Well @!#$, no wonder GM went out of business
yes because gm is the only company it happens to.
look around, older cars have clearcoat failure. it's a fact of life.
I love how everyone jumps on the car manufacture.. while yes part of the problem.. exterior maintenance and weather conditions play a big role too.. have you owned this car brand new and waxed it every 3 months? whats to say the owner before you never waxed it.
You guys work for GM or something? You both got asshurt with a quickness
AtoBsunfail (Troy) wrote:You guys work for GM or something? You both got asshurt with a quickness
neither of us got asshurt. you blamed gm for failing clearcoat issue's, when in all reality lik i said this happens to pretty much every manufacturer. period. older car's experience paint issues, especially if they haven't been properly maintained. paint doesn't last forever.
what is with all the whiney little bitches lately?
meh...whatever. not like im taking it to shows, i drive it to work. It's beat to @!#$ anyway and its paid for so i might as well drive it til i crash it or the wheels fall off, right? The car has
sat in the elements for a year on 2 different occasions while i was fighting in 2 different wars...needless to say, it wasnt waxed regularly during these periods Stephen

And you're surprised that the clear coat is peeling off?

Well for one your pretty stupid for asking about who is having problem on a paint job that was factory. Guess what prob 99%of the people here have factory paint. Also your lack of care for the paint job factors into the deterioration of it. But the biggest factor is the fact that it is a cavalier. The car was never meant to last any certain amount of time it was a POS car for the poor people. GM doesn't give a flying @!#$ about their customers esp the ones that buy a bottom of the line car. Hell they don't even care about the ones that bought their flag ship car.
Disclaimer:
Dey see me Trollin' Dey hatin' for trollin dey trying to catch me ridin dirty.
first gen neons have it worse.. lol so common so see big chunks of paint missing.
That is what wax is for.
ANd GM was in danger of going out of business when the government stepped in (wich they should not have done).. they didnt go out of business but a lot of people say they did because they probably would have... at least for a short time.
But saying they went out of buisness makes you sound ignorant... say something like "no wonder they needed a government bail out" or something like that instead.
As for the paint.... pretty much any car or vehicle I see now adays has really crappy paint... every car on the lot has lemon peel brand new for the most part... its sad. And just wax your car on a semi regular basis is you want to keep the clear coat in good shape.
I don't have any finish problems and my paint is 13 years old.
Anyone get the symtec protective coating when buying their car?
I will say that I have noticed that the black cavaliers get patches where the paint looks like it is eating itself away. My friends 99 has it and is spreads really fast, and now my 04 is starting to get it on the C pillar. I have no idea what it is, but I do know that there is something there that is GM's fault.
You want to talk about crappy paintjobs... look at Toyota. My '09 Vibe GT which I have had for just over a year (purchased brand new) already has quite a few rock chips on the front bumper, along with a small dent/rock chip on the corner of the hood above the headlight and a gouge about an inch long from where something flew up and took the paint right off
. I wash and wax it often and clay bar it twice a year, unfortunately all Vibes are known for having terrible paintjobs
. Needless to say, I have already started saving for a new paintjob down the road
.
It does ultimately depend
a lot on how often the car is washed and/or waxed though. The less you wash and/or wax it, the faster the clear coat and/or paint is going to be eaten away by the elements, especially if it spends a lot of time outside rather than in a garage. And unfortunately, if you bought the car used and the previous owner/owners didn't wash and/or wax the car you end up paying the price of having crappy looking paint. When I sold my '02 Sunfire GT (purchased brand new) in 2008, the paint on it was immaculate because I had kept up on washing and waxing it. Now our '94 Sunbird (purchased brand new) on the other hand looks terrible, than again, it is 16 years old, but it wasn't washed and waxed as much as it should/could have and it shows. The clear coat is pretty much non-existent on the hood and trunk, plus it has an asston of rust to boot.
^^^^ toyotas paint sucks ass lately my moms got an 08 yaris she got brand new and theres chips everywhere that have gone down to the metal and have started to rust and i wash and wax it often.
almost 2 weeks since troy guess he got asshurt lol. its all in the maintance and the regions. People in the north have to deal with salt and other road chemicals for winter. which takes a toll. our friends down in the south western states deal with the constant beating of the sun. i mean my friend has owned his Honda and his buick since brand new in 2000. both have been painted at least 3xs since then due to the hot phonix sun. he washes and waxs alot but it sits out side 24/7. so while ur "beat to hell" car has failing paint dont mean its the manufactures fault. heck leave bird poop or tree sap to long it will take it off to. from the sound of it u just didnt care about the car n probally dont takle care of it hence ur failure. I just finished rebuilding a car that sat outside uncovered year round unwashed for 3yrs and one wash n wax later paint is beutiful n shinny and its factory 30yrs old gm so.
The way I see it, If you wash your car once a week and wax it atleast twice a year, you should be good. I typically spray wax after each wash in the summer.....but depending on where you live? Different geographic regions will have different problems.....chicago= rust....phoenix=oxidation.....take care of the car and the paint will last longer..

I'm still here. I've owned the car since it had 16k on it. I never washed it, or waxed it. I didnt know it would kill the paint, i was just ok with it being dirty. Oops. I'll know better when I get another car, but I doubt that will be any time soon. I like the Sunflower and plan to keep it til it dies. Guess I'll get to waxing and see if I can slow it down...
bring the flame bishes, i got my fire suit.

Yep, it sure does
. Fortunately most of mine so far are on the bumper cover i.e. plastic, but I do have a couple that are on metal
.

You could try clay barring it. It won't bring the clear coat back obviously, but it will help remove oxidation from the paint that still has clear coat on it. It sounds like it can't get any worse, so anything you do from here on out is only going to improve the look of the car.
