So I got pulled over last night by NYS trooper for a blown brake light. I dont drink and drive anymore, so it was quick, but he did tell me that the tint I have (50% on all 4 doors and rear window) was illegal under a new NYS law that says that the maximum allowable tint is 70% in the rear window and back passenger windows, fronts cant have any without a doctors approval. He let me go (i have a few NYS Trooper PBA stickers, dont know if they help or not, but whatever). I've heard stories about cops making people pull the tint off right there to avoid the ticket. Guess I was lucky?
Was this cop giving me BS? The law as I last heard it was a maximum of 35% in the front windows, with no limit on the rear doors and window. 50% isnt bad at all; i can still see out all my windows with no problem but 70% is now the maximum? You might as well close all the tint shops in NY because 70% is like not having tints at all.
Personally, I blame the ricers for these stupid laws. Surprised they didn't come out with a tint tax yet...
I haven't really heard anything like that but some tint sites say 70% tint on the windows for NY. If that's the case though, it's like having no tint. By the way, how dark is 50%? It seems that's the limit for drivers windows in VA and I'm considering it for my Cav.
Yes, in NYS 70% is the law, however, last I knew it was 70% on the front windows, and rear side windows, 20% on the rear window, but that was a number of years ago.
They may have changed that law to 70% on rear side windows, none on front windows, but I don't know about that.
50% tint is next to nothing, let alone 70%. 70% is useless imo. 35% is fine, which is what I have on my front windows. I can see just fine out of them, and I can back up no problems. I know how to back up using my side mirrors.

Tint law for NY is 70% side windows, any % on the back, and 6 inches down the windshield, which I assume would be 70%
Weird part though, is that this site says the tint law was enacted in 91.
yeah... if 70% is all that is allowed you might as well say NO amount is allowed. you can barely see 70%
180hp in 1989 or 145hp in 2002, you decide. >
sad but true... basically any tint on the front will get you a ticket..
my ex had 5% all the way around which is literally black... got pulled over and only had to remove the front tint.
As far as I know thats always been the law. Ive had under 5% on the fronts and rear and only had one problem. I've also had tint on every car/truck I have owned and the only time its been a problem is with one dick head cop i dealt with (no I'm not saying he was a dick for doing his job and giving me a tint ticket, he was a dick for other reasons before the tint got brought up)
I'm willing to take the risk and get pulled over.

I chose the 50% because my '96 sunfire vert had 20% all the way around (not by me, the previous owner) and the cops would be on me like flies on @!#$. This was the first time I've been pulled over in over a year and it was the brake light that got me pulled over, not the tint. Personally, I really like the 50%; its not too dark, but definitely better than 70% which is basically flushing $150-$200 down the toilet
Quiklilcav wrote:Wow. 70% is ridiculous. When I lived in NY, it was 50% driver and passenger window, 35% on rear side windows, and nothing on the rear. The funny thing is that most SUVs come factory with 35% on the rear passenger windows, and the rear window. How can it be legal for that, but illegal if you put it on? Some of the laws they make regarding vehicle mods are foolish.
I definitely agree that the laws are dumb, don't make sense, and I think the changes in the law were due to every ricer POS in the state giving responsible people a bad name. Its just another excuse the cops can use to pull you over. Im not saying you are automatically an @!#$ if you drive a honda with tinted windows, but you guys should know what I mean. Yeah, I dont think you should be able to do 5% all the way around (someone I know did this with a Jeep, made the damn thing a death trap; the windows always had to be open to see behind him at night) but there should be a sensible middle ground... Tint shops would be out of business if people actually paid attention to these laws. Laws become meaningless when they are selectively enforced; I mean, is it right to harass the people with legit tint (20%, 35%, 50%, all make you able to still see around you) when, like Quiklilcav said, many cars and suvs come off the line with "illegal" tint, but you dont see dealerships scrambling to peel the tint off their cars to meet the laws standards.
This is just another money-making ploy thought up by our geniuses in Albany who can't agree on a budget, but find no problem in squeezing money out of decent people.

hey !! nothing wrong with all people in albany!
There is nothing wrong with people FROM Albany, it's the people that want to go back I worry about.
According to personal knowledge window tint laws in NY are as follows:
Nothing except factory tint up front, yes this look clear, but it has a UV tint on it so the sunlight doesnt ruin the interior.
Anything on the rear window, and rear side windows.
I run 5% on my rears and have never been asked about it.
But they made me remove my 35% on my fronts.
MN is gay... nothing alowed on windshield at all, and nothing darker than 50% all the way around. i got pulled one day for having 35% got a verbal warning since it wasn't my car
