Thinking of buying tint, and doing it myself. Bad Idea?
Saturday, May 01, 2010 12:43 PM
I check out some tutorial video of tinting car windows. I didn't seem that complicated. So I was thinking of just buying the precut tint on ebay with the tools and just doing it my self rather than paying 180$. Anyone buy car tint on ebay? any advice is appreciated.

bad idea tried this on my buddies car once pain in the ass and a waste of money better to save for a couple weeks then try it and shop around i finally found this lady in a town about 40 min from me who owned her own business she did my four door all windows and front strip at 20% for 100$, one year later still looks great.

Its not hard to do if you have patience. I have done many side windows but never done a rear window. Partly because I don't have that much patience and partly because I don't have tint big enough.

i wish i could get mine tint for 180 up here to get my back side windows rear window and fronts it will be about $320...stupid overpriced city but if i drive 6 hours i can get it done for maybe $218
I would suggest saving up your money and just getting it done IMO and then it is usually guaranteed not to peel etc.

take it to someone who knows what there doing.. at least the rear window. i personally rather pay $200 for someone to tint my windows and guarantee it then $60 and it look like @!#$ and wish you would of had someone else do it, then having to pay or spend hours removing the @!#$ty tint you put on... just a hypothetical idea though...

I taught myself how to tint and it def takes practice. You will not get it right on the first time (trust me, lol)

If you must, start with the corner triangle window. Thats the easiest window in the car to begin with. If you find that window difficult to do, go to a pro.

I agree with the people who have tinted before. Takes lots of practice to get it right.

I have only done a handful of cars/trucks but still don't like trying to do the rear window.

Yeah we did the two rear doors on my neon, wasn't too bad and if we'd had the tool or cut a bit off all around the window it'd be fine, but besides a little peel in the top corners, there still looking pretty good. But the tint for me was also not big enough for the rear window... wtf

I'd go professional and save yourself time, also at least with my cars, the pro tint hasn't faded at all, the one we put on the neon, both windows have faded

If you want to get a feel for the difficulty, get some of that cheap tint from Wally world and mess with it. If you get it looking good then would probably be able to do precut. Cutting the stuff is the biggest PitA. I just don't know about the back window. Definitely don't leave the walmart stuff up though, it turns purple...

take it to a pro, i just had my fronts done and they tape the jam of the windows because of the fuzz. he had a vinyl plotter that cut the shape out over size but it was well worth it. lifetime warranty and all. cost me $80 for fronts only 35%

^^^ i did the lil 1/4 windows and the windshield banner on my 95 grand prix 4 years ago and it's still nice and dark. in fact, it looks every bit as nice as the professional job i had done for the larger back windows at the same time.

different weather and more sun would certainly have more effect on that though. however, its never been garaged and has been a daily driver for every day of those 4 years.

agree with everyone, start small. if you cant even do a small one you'll be cutting ur wrists after attempting a back window. they are such a nightmare. ive often wondered how even the experts get it right. its not nessesarily the size that gets you, its the contours and curves that are the problem. tint does not like to stretch so you need to persuade it to do so. and getting that part to work is very tricky.

All I want... is a little of the good life

def. get it done professionally. I just had mine done a few weeks ago and it looks amazing. I got 5 % on the back window and back quarter windows and 15% on my door windows. Only cost me 180 even and it looks very nice and is nice and dark inside. Its well worth the money to go to a professional.

i would suggest letting a pro do it. I've seen the tutorials as well and it doesn't seem very complicated, but patience is required. My brother went to do the back windows on his Jeep and before he even got one done he gave up because it is a slow job. I agree that cutting it the biggest PITA.
Just let the professionals take care of it and enjoy the results. Remember: warranty is always a must!

I did it myself, and I'm not happy with it. It's not bad unless you look closely at it. So I'm probably the only one that notices the tiny bubles, but its my car, so only my opinion matters anyway. Now I'm going to end up paying more to have a pro do it because they will charge me to remove the old tint. Plus I wasted money on the tint I that needs tobe removed. Those how-to videos make it looks so easy, but thats because they ae trying to sell a product. It takes practice and patience, and in the end its a skill you will rarely ever use again.

So basicaly, I would suggest just getting someone to do it for you.

i tinted mine 5% on the back in strips and 35% on the sides the back looks pretty damn good the only thing on the sides is the few tiny bubbles caused from dirt and s#%t getting behind the tint so if you do it just make sure the surfaces are freaking clean as hell my dad had his all done on his cav for 250 and in the next five days got busted by the same cop and had to peel them off but after he peeled the fronts off he said f!#%& that ill just pay a fine if he gets busted again lol
