Front Bowtie Installation - Stupid Question?
Sunday, March 21, 2010 4:29 PM
i bought a CF bowtie and I just went out today to see what it would look like on the car. I noticed that the car's oem bowtie has a crease in it that follows the crease of the front bumper... is that going to be a problem when it comes to putting the new one on? I just don't think that the CF one is going to bend at all and I don't want to break it or have it sticking off the bumper...
Could anyone who has done this or just plain taken off the bowtie tell me if the surface below is creased or flat? Maybe the bowtie is just creased internally to match the lines of the cover

Also, i would appreciate pics of other people's results if you feel like posting,
thanks

I'm pretty sure that its flat behind there. You should be ok.

without the bow tie it has that same body line

but it shouldn't make much of a difference. the double sided tape on the back of your c/f emblem should take up any difference of height the edge has between the two sides..just when you install it press firmly on the entire emblem to make sure the sides stick to the piece.

I personally thinks it just looks best in general with no emblem in there at all.. i would of be even happier if the damn grille piece didn't have the indentation of the emblem.

i think it'd be great if they sold a grill that was plain jane with no indent.
thanks for the help. I'll probably get to this on Tuesday and see what happens. I think it will be fine, just like you said to press it on there pretty firmly to get a good hold.

today is a nice day out so I decided to take off the old bowtie and put on the new one ....

... unfortunately i could not get the CF one to stick to the surface..
I pressed it VERY firmly for at least 3 minutes (felt like forever) but the left side of the bowtie kept popping up after a few seconds. I thought maybe i hadn't dried the surface properly so i took the badge back off and re-dried it. It wasn't wet but i was just making sure. Put it back on and same result... and now because I took it off that time the left end of the bowtie's 3M tape is sort of dirty so I don't think it will stick properly ever. The car does look better without a bowtie than it did with the OEM one though, so I'm just a lil disappointed that I couldn't put the CF one on after I paid $20 for it

any ideas?

Its 3m tape on the back of it. supposed to be good stuff from what i have used it for. and it wont peel the cf off, they are backed by a pvc bowtie as well to make it thicker.

3M is a good tape to use, but the surface where the bowtie mounts has that crease down the middle that follows the "line" on the bumper. Trying to bend the CF to stick to the bumper creates too much tension i think and the tape wouldn't hold
So it shouldn't be a problem taking that tape off the back of the CF?

Where did you say I can get some of that weather stripping tape?

mine is missing the bowtie, I was thinking of just painting it a diffrent color, eiether red or blue. the car itself is white.

what I did with my car was I left the bowtie laying on the dash with the windows up in the summer, it got nice and hot, the bow tie started to curl up on the outside, then I put it on and used 2 c clamps to hold it in place over night (take the grill off, it pops right out)

I like that idea, but i think before i try it I'll have to get a new thing of tape for the back of it. It got a little bit dirty when I removed the badge to reposition it.

How exactly does the grill pop out? I've never had to do anything with it before.

pull straight outwards (OUT not up), its just held on by clips, no screws or bolts of anything. Start on one end and work your way over to the other.

When I got one from Jason a while back I just bent it a little bit and it didn't hurt it at all, stuck great for the year I had it on. I'm actually surprised no one has offered a replacement grill without the indent yet.

I put mine on with gurilla glue and zip tied it till it dried...the 3m tape didn't stick for more then 2 seconds.

weird... I have not had any problems with the tape i used, and i used tape from the exact same roll when i installed mine. layed it all out in the sun for about 2 hrs. took some paint prep supplies, cleaned it real well, then c clamped it to the front piece. and still stuck there great.

I decided to get the C-clamps out and removed the grill from the car.. Hopefully this will do the trick. It's been sitting in the sun all afternoon and I'm leaving it clamped overnight.

oh and I started removing my moldings. check out the thread

thanks!
