Need suggestions on a lighting upgrade.
Tuesday, March 09, 2010 9:42 AM
My main goal is to gain more lighting for the road with slight custom look which is legal enough to not get pulled over frequently. I would really appreciate any advice or suggestions . This would be my first lighting related upgrade. I'm driving a 2000 sunfire se sedan.

I first considered getting an hid setup with the retrofit projectors having the high beams hid and lows just regular.

My second idea. Which i'm guessing would be the quickest easiest lighting mod. Getting that relay (not sure what its really called) that allows you to Keep the highs and lows on at the same time for high beam mode. That i'm sure would really make a difference.

My third Idea, let me know if this is not possible or stupid/illegal. Replace the front yellow turn signal lens with a clear lens and rewire it so that its now fog lights (which I don't have) and and somehow wire it to allow the signals to work during the use or not of the new fog lights. Basically converting my turn signals into fog lights/turn signals.

My forth idea, which I know is more complicated. Get a modded front bumper which allows a new spot for auxiliary fog lights. Would i be able to modify this bumper to fit my car.I think its a 95-'99 Sunfire GT bumper.

I would prefer a clean logging fog light setup like the picture above. But don't want to go 500 for this project if it means changing the bumper to get the fogs. So many options but what would be recommended? What would be the easiest option to my lack of light.
Here's my front bumper

This would be the easiest approach to get best lighting, rather than just adding fog lights?

So then i'm going with hids. Sorry i'm kind of new to HID. I want to do this right so that i'm not blinding other people. Whats the best hid setup thats not going to get me pulled over frequently in Ontario, Canada? Thats really all I care about. Should I go with Only hid high beams at 6000K and just have regular low beams. would that be the most legal looking setup?

If thats the case, during high beam setting. Is it possible to have the low beam on at the same time as the hid High beam?

Or should I go with the dual hid beam. I'm not to sure what i need to do with the housing or projectors. I'm a bit confused with the right and wrong way of installing hids with all the misinformation on the web.

I found some useful threads that help me understand hid better. I need a projector to stop the glare of regular hid bulbs alone. No matter what the HID setup, its still illigal and i can get a ticket for it. I also can't put universal hid projector in my stock headlight housing. Is that right? Correct me if i'm wrong anywhere. I need to buy a custom housing that has an molded to fit a projector in it?

Can I do this my self with hid bulbs and projectors and just put them in my oem housing?

In terms of lighting efficiency, What if i mount external universal hid projector lights in the lower bumper holes of this se sedan which has no oe fog housings. I may look tackier but be a simple addon. How will the hid project fogs do. Will they out perform my regular headlights and give me more viewing distance?

I bought the 35 watt 5000k high/low kit from ddm tuning. I installed them in my stock housing with no projectors (even though it's "wrong") after installing I reaimed my headlights down a little. I don't get flashed anymore than I did with Sylvania Silverstars and I have met many cops head on and never been pulled over.

I don't have the high beam portion working yet but with the output from the low beams it hasn't really been needed yet.

I did mine by myself took maybe 20-30 minutes to install everything, it's all plug and play.

Is the're a noticable difference with the weaker temperature light? Does it look stock but just brighter and more efficient?

I don't know, never had the 6000k. The 5000 is just a little bit whiter light, it still has a nice blue tint to it and doesn't look stock at all.

I would stay with the 5000k if I got another set.

I had a light issue after I smoked my headlights and driving through the heavy rain at night was some scary sh%t!
So I picked up a pair of pilot driving lights and installed them in place of the front bumper grill inserts ( 95 Sunfire).
They make a huge diffrence when driving if you aim them a little outward they will make it easier to see close around the front or a little above normal plane and straite forward are perfect for driving at night along open highways.

I only paid $20 at Wal-Mart and you can get them in diffrent sizes to fit the bumper spaces.

$20 for some ugly fog lights or $50 for HIDs?

Thats a tough choice...

This. I have projectors in my summer car, but in the GF's cav, we have 6k HIDs with no projectors. Never been flashed. Just did like above and its fine.
And, I'm in Ontario, Canada

I got the DDM Slim kit and I beleive most others on here have gotten.

I would stick with the slim one makes them much easier to hide.

I am considering getting the DDM 5000K HIDs for my Vibe. I currently have Silver Stars and I love that they're white, not cheesy blue so I was just curious how you would compare the color of the 5000K HIDs to the color of the Silver Stars? Are they basically the same color, are the HIDs bluer, etc. Thanks!

The order I made was copied and pasted above. Ordered the 35w hi/low. Just gotta pay $20 extra. Scott said he has them as well, but he also said he can't get the high beam portion working. Anyone else having issues with the hi/low function with this kit?

I'm assuming you mean 4500 since DDM doesn't have 4300? Regular Silver Stars are 4000K and Silver Star Ultras are 4100K, so the 4500 would probably be alot closer to the color I am looking for than the 5000K. I don't want any cheesy blue tint at all, or at least as little as possible. Thanks for the information!

DDM has 35 watt high/low kits.

The only reason they don't work is because I haven't hooked up the high portion yet. It was well below zero when I put them in and I didn't mess with it.

He's right, the 5000k is a little blue. I wouldn't say its cheesy at all. The light on the road is only a little blue but the lens does have a fairly blue tint to it.

I really like the color of them and the way they light up the road and signs they also cut through the snow/rain/fog really well!
