One of the guys at work has an '04 Sunfire, and I've convinced him to go spoiler-less. The problem is, he can't afford to get a shop to do the weld shut and repaint. I'd heard of people using body plugs to cover up the holes temporarily, so I think that is the best solution. He's going to spray them silver to match the body. We're thinking body plugs with some silicone sealant underneath, and a rubber grommit for good luck. Does anyone have a better suggestion? He doesn't want to spend a lot of money on the project, but doesn't want to rust out his trunk, either.

If you can't afford a mod....you shouldn't do said mod.
I agree with what others have said, just wait for the money.
But if you really want to try, pick up a second deck lid at a scrapyard, and try whatever you want. If it look good use it, if it doen't, throw it away.

when i got my car the previous owner misdrilled the holes for my spoiler. so TEMPORARILY i used Jb-weld. Sanded that smoothed over and looked half decent. now im looking for a spoilerless trunklid and gonna get a CF overlay for it. and shave it first too.
As you all said, I had originally told him it would be best to get a shop to do it. He declined because of the expense, and then I had mentioned using body filler or something to that effect, but he didn't like the downtime. I'll try to talk to him again about having it parked for a weekend. If all else fails, I guess I'll mention the JB Weld. I so agree with all of you, but whether he listens a second time or not, I can't say.

Try what we did on a Sentra trunk:
Installed the bolts and nuts that hold the spoiler in place, using a second set of nuts on the inside and thread the screw through it.
Get the nut through the lid so it sticks out, take a side grinder and cut it flush with the trunk, just be carefull not to cut the trunk!
If you have a sander or die grinder use a heavy grit on the bolt and get it to shape nice and flush. With a light layer or two of body filler or glazer.
Sand down and repaint. Works good just requires a little more time then welding in some patches like the shop.
I would still use a little silicone on the inside bolts to make sure they dont rattle and break the layers of fillers

body filler, JB weld, or bolts then filler are all aweful ways to go about it.
Seriously, if he can't afford it, he clearly doesn't need the mod at this point. It's amazing how a lack of patients and critical thinking leads to hack jobs
I find it hard to believe there isn't someone located near you that could weld in the holes for him. And same goes for paint.
J03Y, there are lots of places that will do it, but they are all overpriced. I live in an area where the cost of living is some of the highest in the country (next to Saskatoon, the Okanagan Valley, and a couple other places at most, outside of the territories of course.). Naturally, to make money for that cost of living, everyone is screwing everyone out of extra money. A lot of places will use cost of living and shipping of materials as an excuse to put up outrageous markup on things.
That being said, I haven't spoke to him since, but he still has a spoiler on his car. I suspect he may be able to find someone to weld (I think his father is a rig worker, and they always know guys who will do some work for cheap on the side), but paint and filler would be the big cost.
And David Diaz, I will never do anything you've done, because you are exactly the hack job that J03Y is talking about.

Maybe post in your regional forum and see if anyone has any suggestions. Usually there's someone around locally that will help others out.
If you guys were close to me i could weld it up for him for free.
