Well, When I bought my cavi, it had quite a bit of rust on the passenger side quarter panel...about from the wheel well to the spot where it meets the door...and its about 5" up the quarter....I talked to my friend that runs a body shop on repairing it, and he said a company called SEM has adhesive out that his shop actually uses, it is made for roof skins, door skins, quarter panels, pretty much anything except rocker panels...I guess he said like 80% or so of shops now, when they do a repair instead of spot welding the panels back on, they actually use this adhesive...anyway, he said what he would do, just to simplify the repair rather than dragging the welder out, is cut the rust out, get rid of the rust, then make a patch panel out of some metal, grind, then apply the adhesive, from the inside, then use all metal on the outside, then do the body work and done!
What I am wondering, is if any of you guys have used this stuff for the same thing?? He said it holds up great, and they have never had a problem with it, and it will last just as long as if it was welded, and just as strong.....anyway...just trying to get your opinions on it....he has been doing body work for like 20 some years now, so I pretty well trust him, but kind of gauging other opinions before I decide on it
Thanks in advance for all your help!!!

probably talking about panel bond.. 3M says theirs is stronger then welding. Its more weatherproof as well.. I've only put bed sides on with the stuff so I don't know how well it works for patch panels.. but I've never had problems with it. I don't quite understand how he is planning on putting adhesive on the inside and metal on outside unless he is going to overlap his patch panel to your original 1/4 panel. and body work the difference in height away..
either way if he warranties the work, then I wouldn't worry about it.
Well, his plan was use the adhesive from the inside, so it would be kind of recessed to the other part of the quarter, use the adhesive to adhere it to the back of the good metal on the quarter, then use a thing called ALL-METAL on the outside, which is like...well, pretty much like metal when it dries to bring the surface up and also, seal anything that may have some pin holes in it from the adhesive, then body fill it....

this stuff is jesus, less time, less prep, less heat affected area and it bonds like you friggn welded it, i put a cowl hood scoop on a bagged dakota and didnt have to worry about warping, and its made by 3M then its a win
the 3m panle bond is good, but fusor is better, gm.ford, dodge, just to name a few all use fusor products, there is nothing wrong is using panle bond, hell half of a 1/4 panle is panle bonded on the car, most panle bond is corrosion resistant, comes in slow to fast dry times, but still needs a 24 hour cure time,
i would go with fusor and 3m
can i haz bondo
The stuff the guy uses that I am talking to is SEM....anyone have any experiance with that?? Has the same claims as 3M and all..."stronger than a weld" and all that...he says he has never had a problem....I am just not familiar with SEM products? maybe someone who has used it could chime in?? If not I will probably go the 3M route..

i personally dont like sem products, have had a few cars come back due to their poor products and had to use the best product around which is fusor, like i said GM, FORD, DODGE AND OTHER CAR MANUFACTUERS USE FUSOR,, ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,panel bond is like welding in i-car class and any tech will tell you the metal has to be preped correctly or any panle bond wont bond correctly
if its sem 3m or fusor nothing will bond with poorly preped metal, so i dunno what more ya want people to tell ya, i too have been around close to 20yrs used everything from sem 3m fusor, i dont like sem products, i perfer fusor
can i haz bondo
