i am puting an aftermarket wing on and it doesnt have a third brake light in it and someone mentioned to me that i should make it so that where it says sunfire on the back of the trunk lid is my third brake light that way whenever i touch the brakes the word sunfire is illuminated.

i was wondering if anybody had heard of this being done or even just makeing the word sunfire illuminated. i can figure out the wireing harnes stuff i just want to know how hard it is to get a ligth behind that word sunfire

yeah its just an overlay. just remove the layer, or buy a light that fits with out the lettering either way its fairly simple.

Wait. My Pontiac is always lit. Unless you have a 4 door?

Um, actually it's not an overlay. It's part of the trunk panel. I think you are thinking of the third brake light overlays that are sold on eBay. He is referring to the PONTIAC that lights up on the trunk panel of Sunfire Coupes.

Actually, it won't be fairly easy because the PONTIAC is already lit up by your license plate lights and it's the law to have license plate lights. It has been discussed on here before, but I am not aware of anyone who has actually done it.

ya that sounds i bit closer to reality. i have a 99 2door gt. hmmm could do some fiddleing with fiberglass and black paint so that the licence plate lights dont light it up but thats sounds like alot more bother than its worth.

hmmm. anybody else have a good idea for what i can do for a third brake light that is creative. either that or i just dont have a third brake light

You could always just do what I did and get a rear deck with a third brake light out of a Cavalier. All you would have to do is move the wires for the third brake light inside to the rear deck. It's very simple and it's stock so it looks really clean and nice.

Here are some pictures of the Cavalier rear deck and third brake light I put in my '02 Sunfire GT after I got rid of the spoiler:

^^^ actually you dont even need to move any wires. every car has the wiring for the 3rd brake light already installed and ready to just plug in.

well at least that was the way my 98 z24 was. wiring was there and hot... just had to plug it in. worked slicker than @!#$. i loved it.

I must confess... I feel like a monster!

It must be either just a '95-'99 thing or just a Cavalier thing because neither my '02 Sunfire GT nor my '02 Sunfire Sedan had the wiring for the third brake light under the rear deck .

My 05 sedan came stock spoilerless, so the third brake light was on the rear deck.
However, I switched over to a 99 cavi trunk with a spoiler and third brake light, and the wiring for the trunk brake light was right there ready to go, like brad said, allI had to do was plug it in.

Except I guess my case is vice versa to your scenario haha.

the wireing for my third brake light are on the underside of the trunk lid not the rear deck. but ya that would work i just have to remove the window tint where it light would be on the rear deck

Yup, pre existing plug and wire for the third brake light on the rear deck lid.
Like Brad, I removed the factory Z spoiler which meant that there was no third brake light.
So I did make the change to the standard rear deck cover with the third brake light already built in, factory style.
Looks factory (because it is lol) and now in black which I like too.

What % tint do you have on the rear window? I had 15% on the rear window of my '02 Sunfire GT and when I would hit the brakes the third brake light would shine right through the tint no problem. In my opinion it looks much better if the tint goes over the third brake light.

Here are two pictures of my GT. The first one is when the place did not tint over the third brake light and the second one is when I got it re-tinted to cover the third brake light:

im not sure exactly what % tint is in there cause it was there when i got the car. but it is rlly dark as far as tints go. cant se into the car at all inless you [put your head against the window.

Well, I would suggest going ahead and putting the third brake light back there and seeing what it looks like lit up through the tint before cutting the tint around it. If it shines through enough you won't need to cut the tint. Just my $.02 though.
