so i managed to snag a jsp mini-scorpion the other day from the autowreckers for 24 bucks now i am gonna put it on my sunfire which means fiberglass yay..... lots of fiberglass. lol and i need to figure out something to do for a third brake light since the one that should be on the thing is missing.
null
this should be fun should look good when im done i will be posting pics of progress on a regular basis.
or you could always swap to the cavalier base model rear decks that have the third brake lights...
Thats what I would do anyways,
cant wait to see updates
got the trunk lid all fiberglassed and got the bondo down just as it started to get dark out
Image
got a second layer of fiberglas on the spot where the old non existant 3rd brake light should be
the expanding builders foam i applyed then sanded down to give it the right shape did disintigrate from the resin fotunatly the fiberglass had a chance to set up first so it didnt loose it shape.
Image
fixed up some crackes and dings in the spoiler still needs alot of sanding then bondo and sanding
Image
still to do:
-fab aluminum mount for wing to fasten to hood
-mount wing
-enclose alum mounts in foam or some sort then shape it
-over mounts and foam
-bondo
-sand
-bondo
-sand
-prime (spoiler and trunk lid)
-paint (to match original color of the car so i dont have to repaint anything else)
Oh god,
Have fun redoing it next year.

actually i have done stuff like this b4 and useing the same materials. my friend had a 94 honda accord that had a bunch of large rust holes in it and i did the same thing on it that i am doing here except the holes im delaing with are mush smaller. and he hasnt had any problems with cracks or anything and that car spends its life in prince george as for the spoiler i am stricltly going to be useing fiberglass i intend to makes several layers and then sand them down till its smooth with only a light layer of bondo to take out any imperfections. and remember that the fiberglass isn't doing anything structural its just there to look good the alum is the structure.
i know where your comnig from with the oh god have fun reding it thing...... but when fiberglass is not haveing stress put on it or even when it is if you do it right then it can be very strong... and i have been repairing fiberglass canoes for years so i do know a thing or to about useing it. the main thing is not useing to much bondo cause that is weak and will crack eazily. which is y im useing the long strand kevalr bondo not the light body filler.

You didnt mention anything about the different expansion rates metal and F/G have.
Also if you work at a body shop let me know, so i can make sure to stay away.

true and for the trunk i did the best i can to prevent that from ruining it . if it does do that at a l8ter date i can fix that with a sanding disk then redo it proporly with metal. but that is much eazier the larg part of this project is concentrated on makeing the spoiler fit the car and since im not actually fiberglassing it to the car so i can remove it and repair the trunk. spoiler should be fine sine there is not fiberglass on metal there.
anyways while i have plenty of experience with canoes i have only done bady work 3 or 4 times. and i can actually list what ive done. i repaired those large rust holes with fiberglass and some long strand kevalr bondo. shaved the antenna on that same accord again fiberglass and long strand bondo. then the big PITA was when somebody stole his aftermarket wing. which was one of those aluminum tuner wings somebody tore it off and using one layer of fiberglas then bondo and sand it smoth this was a pain causehis trunk was all humpy bumpy and in some places i had to have a 3/16 layer of bondo x0. and then once on my 93 grand am...., ( only time it needed any body work cause it had no rust) was cause my firend acidentally ran into the car with his quad and punched a hole in the quarterpanel nice neat hole no rale noticalbe dent around it. i havnt had any problems with any of those fixes cracking or anything even the trunk one and if those didnt crack or anything then i think thise on should be fine.
ok you obviously cant take a hint
so ill tell you
i cant afford a body shop and i do not currently have acces to the materials or tools to do the trunk proporly with metal. so im doing the best i can do with what i have ok happy.the trunk is only a temp measure once i am back in prince george where i have the tools to do it with metal this summer then i will then ok the little thing about which body shop do i work at was totaly uncalled for the only reason i used fiberglass on that accord was cause i knew the car wasnt worth doing it proporly. and the grand am was the same thing.

i forgot to mention that the owner was one of my best friends and he didn't think it was worth doing with metal
Yea, because fiberglass stops metal from rusting...

at that point nothing was going to stop it from rusting there was ruswt all over the inside of the bodywork behind the wheels there and i tried to get as much of it as i could with that spray on rust reversal stuff but there is only so much a guy can do when you cant remove the piece of the body that is rusting away. ill also let you know that we had taken the car and every body shop in town before doing it ourselfs and they all refused to work on it because it would start to rust through again and they didnt want to have to deal with him complaining.
