Redout Tailight DIY
Tuesday, July 21, 2009 12:19 PM
ok, I've got everything I need to paint it, I just don't really know how to.

I was told I had to put my tailights in the stove, heat them up, pull them apart and paint them from the inside, some DIYs told me to paint the outside.

I do not have OEM tail lights, I actually have the very popular Euro Altezzas, if you need a pic go to my cardomain page in my profile here on J-body.

So let me know, thanks!

Id do them from the outside.. just spray your red then spray clear.. but i guess.. I will agree with John being odds are this is rattle can stuff.. spray the inside then u dont need clear and it will be shiny on the outside.

Ok, I was also thinking of painting the entire thing including the reverse light and putting the reverse light elsewhere on the car. Is that a bad idea? And where would you suggest putting it?

Also, I figured I'd paint the inside of the light, how would I best go about splitting the two and then putting them back together?

oven, start @ 250* for about 10 minutes on a cookie sheet, see if that softened up the adhesive enough to where it will stretch, then CAREFULLY start getting something like a screw driver in there. pry slow and re-heat often....youll get the hang of it. just be patient or youll be buying another set of tails.

honestly, i would just leave the reverse lights red.....relocating them would not give you a clean look, although your best bet would be a sunfire rear bumper, but i personally dont like the looks of those on cav's

Ok, thank you.

And I would leave them red, but it illegal in Virginia, so I can't leave them red. My original plan was to paint everything but the reverse light and just leave that part clear. But Idk, I'll see how it goes later.

^^^ that wont work well with altezzas, you could hook up some fog lights in the back for inspection, then take them off. thats what i do on my truck.

according to the state inspection manual

reverse only have to be clear if they exist...

cut out the sockets... they'll pass inspection, and you can leave the tails red... who needs fucntional reverse lights anyway...

turn it into a second brake light. that's what I was considering doing to mine, just couldn't figure out how to do it.

That would pass just tie the new brake lights in to the third one

Well they are finished, and they don't look the same, I like 'em.

I need new weatherstripping but overall, it's not that bad.

I decided to paint from the inside, and just take them apart, and took pics of the progress.

Here's some pics:

Yea, they pretty much did look stock when I finished them and put them up, which kind of pissed me off. Then nightfall came and I've never been happier. When lit up, and even if a light just hits them during the day, they don't look stock at all, they actually look pretty cool. If I could take a picture of it and put it up I would, unfortunately the light is too bright and I can't get a clear pic.
