problems with drl's

Ok so here is my problem maybe you guys can offer up some suggestions.
I have an 02 Sunfire and recently my daytime runnning lights just stopped working, now this cause the service engine light to come on. I know this is cuased from the running lights because when I have the parking brake on the indicator for the running lights will some times light up blink a few times then go off and then the service engine light comes on. Has anyone experienced this before and will disabling the drl cause the service engine light to go off.
I have hooked my car up to a code reader to see if that could give some insight but it doesnt register a code at all for it. Any help would be more than appreciated.

you are seeing the service light.....not the service engine light.

Sounds to me that you have a headlight out. This is the exact list of symptoms that occurs when that happens. Check that you have both high and low beams on both sides.

That happened on my 99 GT. What happened was...I had high wattage bulbs installed (cheap ones) and they actually melted the sockets & bulb housings. John is right, that is the service light telling you that you ether have a bulb out or reduced voltage to a bulb. So after checking high & low status, I would recommend inspecting your bulbs and sockets to ensure there are no additional problems. And NEVER use replacement "halogen" bulbs rated for higher than stock WATTAGE or even bigger problems will result.

switch the bulbs to the opposite sides to ensure they both work, if they do, check the contacts in the wiring harness.

Ok I took Chesta's advice and switched the bulbs before I did anything else. I switched them and the one I was having problems with didn't even light up. I pulled the wiring out and yeah the guy that had this car before me was a hack! He had stripped back some of the insulation to do something, what it was I have no clue. So needless to say the wire corroded and broke apart when I pulled the headlight, so the drl's werent working cause it was shorting out and causeing the lights not work properly. So i fixed all that but am gonna have to to get a pic to show you guys the relay switches the hacked in, but at least he soldered most of it lol.. He wired in the relays for some fog lights and of course he hacked them in and they just stopped working so that is going to be another project.

Haha maybe we did...Mine was a repo'd car I bought it off some guy in Riverview Michigan who bought it for his girlfriend, but they broke up so he sold it lol...I should have known how bad things were when I replaced the stereo and saw the fine work he had done, I guess soldering everything makes it better lol. He didnt do a terrible job, there were 8 wires I didnt have to hook up cause he ran an ampliflier to all four speakers and ran them off the amp but instead of hooking the wires directly to the speakers he took the shortcut way and soldered the wire to the factory wires off the radio instead of taking the doors apart.

Well both headlights were working just one was dim. Come to find out the guy that had the car before me removed some of the insulation on the power wire and it caroded then broke. I did manage to remove his wiring relays but still have to get the actual wiring he did out of the car. Now my fog lights work off the original switches that were in the car.
