I know this has been asked maybe a million times.. however i wish to ask anyway.
I am going to order a new 95-99 GT Sunfire front bumper its kinda rare i guess looks just like SE, but with Foglights. Anyway i know a couple of peeps on the .org have done this. So i am wondering how much some of you gerenally payed to get your bumper painted from primer? i dont need exact prices, i just want to get idea for costs when i call shops tomo and met them.
Thank you for your time. (if you did you hood painted too would like to know how much that came out)
i am painting it WHITE btw
the shop around me, and i had them do this, but it costed me 300 for front and rear bumpers 2 be painted!
seems kinda high, but the work was perfecto!

Honestly your estimates are going to be your best bet. Get a few, do your research on the shops and choose what's best for you.
Remember, cheaper does not equal better, and you USUALLY get what you pay for.
Labor rates vary depending on the cost of living in your area, so just because Joe paid $150, doesnt mean ur getting ripped off if the cheapest quote in ur area is $300... if you follow
I am paying $870 for 2 bumpers and a pair of sideskirts to be stripped and painted.

alright so i spoke to a few shops all pretty much had about the same prices 240$ for bumper. there is one werid thing. One shop i called told me they cant promise the bumper color will match the car if its off the car.
i said what do you mean? he says there is a blend charge of 150$ dollars to make sure the bumper blends prefectly into the car? thats sounds kinda like bull@!#$ to me since i know PLENTY of people that got there bodykits or different @!#$ painted off car and looks prefected. I ask him if hes using the same GM Color Code as the car, he says ya but i cant promise it will match... he wants to charge me 315 for entire job if i have the bumper already installed on the car before i come. Now i am no genius.... however wouldnt the color match if you use the same GM Color Code as the car? these shops do tons of repairs they know extactly the Manufacture colors, and consdering Cavalier and Sunfires are very popular cars.
Anyway just wanted opinions on this. i had two shops say to paint the bumper will be around 240.
Paint does fade over time, no matter what you do. You might have the same color code but the color can look quite different comparing new to five years old or so. Unless you're painting a show car, no one is going to notice, especially if you keep a good coat of wax on everything.
My quarter panel is original paint. You can tell a difference in color between it and my body kit if you look real close. But a little wax makes it impossible to tell.
i paid 240-250 when i had my front painted in 02.
so thats probly a good estimate
thanks for the input, as fare as color fade my car paint is actaully in very good condition, when i removed the side molding after 10 year the paint was extactly the same on under the molding as on the car. However the paint is faded on my old front bumper. werid
I paid $300 for the front bumper, side skirts and rear bumper ALL stripped and painted, but yes you get what you paid for, and the clear coat is now starting to bubble up and peel off in the front, the sides and the rear bumper are doing fine tho lol.. and other shops i asked want to charge me $1000 or $800, so i think i got a deal..

He is correct... allow me to explain...
It does not matter if you have the exact factory color code or not. I believe this is explained in my sticky I wrote up top but I'll explain once more.
When GM or any other car manufacturer makes a color, there's X amount of this tint, X amount of that tint, etc. They don't have an infinite supply of said color, and the longer a color is in production and the more batches of paint need to be mixed, the more variances or shades of that color there is. Same paint code, different shades of the same color.
White is the worst color to match, red can be a pita too.
If the bumper is painted off the car he cannot guarantee it will match, because of the fact there's so many shades and variances in the same color... especially colors that have been out forever.
Contrary to belief also, scanning a paint job will NOT give you the EXACT color to match your car, paint scanners only give you the CLOSEST POSSIBLE FACTORY MATCH TO YOUR COLOR.
If you have a 15 year old car with red paint, due to fading, when they scan your car the closest possible FACTORY MATCH could be a Honda color.
The only way to guarantee a color will match is to blend.
if they blend, they will charge more because they are blending your bumper into the adjacent body panels, fenders, hood if needed... they're BLENDING the paint so yeah... it's more work, more money, but it will match exactly or at least be blended to appear as if it matches perfectly.... if you follow. As long as the dude guarantees the paint will match by blending and will stand by/warranty their work, go there. You do get what you pay for when it comes to quality.
The dude was not bullsh*tting you, he was telling you honestly EXACTLY how it really is and being very upfront.
Rule#1 when it comes to autobody advice... don't listen to what your buddies say or go by how so and so's paint job turned out. Unless your buddy or friends are EXPERIENCED and WELL TRAINED auto body / paint people, always assume they know nothing and talk to a pro. There's nothing more annoying than explaining to someone that what their buddies who think they know everything told them is wrong and trying to explain the RIGHT way of doing things.
Again... the dude was not BSing you, he was telling you factual and accurate information and being very upfront. I'd honestly go to him before anyone who said "yeah we'll shoot that"... yeah it's more money, but if you want everything to match perfectly I'd go to him
just had my front bumper and Lip kit painted on my 05 Sunfire..Cost was $500 to do both pieces..The price went up because I had the plate holes filled and a bunch of rock chip damage..But the out come was great..Now my car is Silver..And i gave them the paint code..And he was telling me with that color there was 2 thousand different types of tinting so..It was hard.. and the sides of my bumper were left untouched just to make the match better..But as I found out also different clear coats also have a way of making the colour change..He uses House of Kolor paint and clear..And the front is a bit darker and my paint is in great shape..So getting a blend for the extra but don't be disappointed if it is a bit darker..But look at almost any new car and you will see the bumpers are always off a bit..The flex agent in the paint will make it darker..So there are lots of things to watch for..Just find a good shop go in and look at cars they have been painted it will tell you lots..
when you say youre getting a gt bumper and its kinda rare.... this makes me confused. gt bumpers are not rare...unless youre mistaking it for the RKsport Original replacement bumper.. pics?

Huh? It honestly sounds like the dude was BSing you to get extra cash. In the years I spent in the autobody/paint field I've NEVER heard of flex agent making a color appear darker. Most paints nowadays COME with flex agents already in them. And, if he was trying to match your factory color, he shouldn't have been using HOK, he should have been using your FACTORY COLOR. DuPont, PPG, Sherwin Williams, Sikkens... any paint company that reproduces factory colors. To my knowledge, HOK, X-otic, etc don't match factory colors.
Clear coats making the color change? Think about that for a second... CLEAR coats. Unless the clear coat is tinted, it will not change the color, it's CLEAR. Clear coats DO make a metallic based paint "POP"... but they don't change the color.
I really don't mean to sound like a biotch... but I think that dude seen you commin and ripped you off by feeding you all kinds of BS, unless things have changed that much since I've been painting, which hasn't been that long ago.

yeah it sounds as if this guy is actually concerned about making sure everything matches up nicely. some people may not care if its a 100% but i hate it. if you want your car to look the best it can make sure they blend it.

I think he meant that the clear coat makes the paint look darker, on my car, if I didnt have the clear coat, it is much lighter and not shiny at all, but once the clear goes on with some buffing, it became darker
