What exterior parts will interchange with years
Monday, August 20, 2007 4:40 PM
Im getting a 05 cavalier for very very good price but it needs new radiator, condenser, fenders, front bumper, computer, hood, lights, airbag with dash( i guess you have to get a new dash when they blow) And a new windshield. Any idea if any parts off my 96 cav will fit? Hoping the airbags and windshield? Im not to worried about fenders ( pretty sure they wont) and bumper & lights which i know wont. Oh and windshield?
-thanks, troy.

Alright I was really trying to stray from answering this post because there is so much to answer and for someone who doesn't know what their doing it can get very complicated

Okay, first off, I Private Messaged you about the dash air bag cover

Now, The windshields are the same I'm pretty sure from 95-05 the uni-body structure didn't change so unless regulations changed in the newer years and the windshield is made stronger or something there the same

Fenders, Bumper, Headlights, Corners, and Hood, WILL work off your 96, but you will have to do a complete front end swap from the 96 meaning, Fenders, Hood, Bumper, Headlights, Corners, Crushguard(or impact foam/plastic), and wiring pigtails will have to be swapped, you will have to wire in the dual bulb system(9005 and 9006 bulbs) the 96 uses from the single bulb system(9007 bulb) the 05 uses. For this there is a Sticky on the top of the exterior forum for, How to do a Front End Swap If you have any questions dealing with the headlight swap, please post them in that thread and not make a new thread.

Radiator i know is different, Condenser i am unsure if it is different or not. Also the Radiator you have to make sure is from a 03-05 ecotec motor which assuming the same for the condenser

Computer is defiantly different between the 05 and your 96(why do u need to replace anyway? unless its fried i wouldn't think you'd need to replace it)

And I'm pretty sure the airbag system is different between 95-99 and 00-05 due to use of BCM in newer years and just how I've noticed how the two are wired in differently

And like mentioned I pm'd you about the dash but so you know all 95-05 cavalier dash covers are the same, now the bezel piece that goes around the radio/gauges/and hvac is different between 95-99 and 00-05.

Anyone feel free to correct me or answer something i missed or didn't know.

You don't have to do a complete front end swap if you don't want. If you want to keep the 03-05 front end you can use your 96 fenders they are the same as 03-05 they just have an extra bracket that holds on to your corner light which needs to be removed in order for the bumper and headlight to be mounted (very easy). Then just pick up a new front bumper and lights and you'd be good. But that means spending more money.

Also if you are swapping the dash not only is the bezel around the HVAC different, but the metal bar behind it is also different, you have to cut it up a little, bit don't know exactly what to do, i think there maybe a sticky or a real good post on doing the swap in the interior forum. I remeber reading it about a month ago.

Other than that Stephen[manta z] has got you taken care of man.

just to clarify, all the windows from 95-05 are the same. they didnt change. this includes windshield, rear window, rear quarter windows, and driver/pass windows....as well as rear driver/pass windows on 4 doors, and driver/pass for verts

I think what he means by dash is just the top cover that is rapped in vinyl with the airbag cover, i don't think he meant the whole dash core and bezel, i just mentioned the bezel in case he considered that part of the dash as well, but i think all he planned on swapping or replacing was the dash top cover.

Are the window "guts" i.e. motor/crank/regulators the same from 95-05 as well? I'm getting sick of power windows that like to die after a short amount of time, and I'm thinking about just replacing them with cranks. However, I need to know which cars I can pull them out of and have them fit.

^^^to my knowledge, yes they are the same. as far as i know, the only things that may be different are where the switches are mounted. some were in the doors, and some were in the console. but either way, thats an easy fix.
