Is this piece simply screwed in? I'd like to remove it, but what is the chances that the paint underneath is ok? WIll there be a bunch of screw holes??
No when you take it off from inside the trunk the paint underneath it will be fine. But there will be about 6 holes showing.

you mean the lightbar on the back for the taillights? Just swap on a 02 or older trunk lid and get a set of tail lights from an 02 or older to replace ur other ones. Problem fixed =)
