Carbon Hood Question
Tuesday, August 14, 2007 11:59 PM
I want to put hood pins in my hood to keep it from rattlin so much when I drive so is there any special prep needed before I drill the c/f?

Not required, but it wouldn't hurt to put a few layers of tape over where you're drilling to make sure you don't accidentally crack the resin coating or anything.

measure, measure, measure.

tape both the top and bottom of the hood where the hole is going to be to prevent chipping and also prevent the drill bit from skating across the surface. start with a much smaller drill bit than the final size of the hole you want and make it consecutively bigger. drill from the bottom up and you're good to go. oh yeah, and measure once more for the hell of it.

like tony said, step drilling will make for much less odds of cracking/walking

I would take some clean finger nail polish and coat the whole after you drill it. It will help seal up the CF and not let it crack later.

1) Take the old hood off.........

2)Bolt the new hood to hinges and center it up......

3)Measure, Measure, Measure again and Install hood pins under the hood.........

4)Put some sort of nailpolish / paint on the top of the pins and let the hood down to mark it......

5)Drill a 1/8" hole through the hood....

6)Drill the 1/8" holes out to 11/64"......

7)Drill the 11/64" holes out to 1/4"........

8)Now you can either keep step drilling OR what I did was used a dremel tool to finish the rest....If using a dremel tool dont use it at real high speed....It will burn the hood....

9)Once your holes are there...Allign the hinge on the new hood....Get it alligned so that the hood release opens it fine and its not too hard to close......

10)Adjust the height of your hood pins to where you want them........

11)Set the round scratch protectors over your pins with the hood down.........Mark them out and drill.....

12)Stare for a while and enjoy your new CF Hood!

Why don't you just move the latch farther down Like I did?

Meh, I would rather spend $10 and know 100% that my hood isnt going to fly up when a tractor trailer drives by a windy day.......I guess once you see someones hood fly up it kinda changes your mind......

i dont have pins either. but my hood has about 3/4 of an inch of fiberglass reinforcment where the latch is. i guess thats what i get for buying an older hood.

Mine's cool... I'm sure the CF holding the latch bolts into place won't break

i guess with a little over 2 years of having this hood on my car (minus winter time) and i havn't had a single problem with it. it gets a little jittery with high winds, but never anything i've had to worry about. still, hood pins are a good idea.

yeah, you don't want moisture getting into the weave causing any problems. good call.
