as far as the "gap" , not sure what you mean...u mean the inset here the tail would be on the lid?
are you talking about getting rid of you inner tails buddy? mainly just a welder and metal piece for the bigger holes. then alot of grinding

weld another small piece in there. thats what i did. i wouldnt wanna try and fill that with glass or filler

as you can see i just tack welded in the inner plate first, then not pictured, but i then took some left over steel and cut it to fit and made sure it sat flush in the hole(using tape to hold it so it didnt fall in) then tacked it and removed teh tape and welded the whole thing together using spot welds. and for that piece if it was raised up it would cause rubbing issues so it has to be flush along the edge of the trunk. i dont have any pics of it afterwards but i got a pic where u can see somewhat..
^^^ yup weld some extra metal in there and seal it up. I dont think i got any pics of mine all welded up sorry
