a. go to radioshack and spend all kinds of money on leds, circut boards, resisters ,soldering equipment ,and how to books
or
b. see if IZN TRBL or whatever his name is can hook you up with some hella sweet looking tail lights with alot less headaches on your end...i know his headlights are pretty sick so he might be able to retro fit some killer looking tails for your fire.......worth a shot? if he can do it i would just spend the money and have him do it since he has prolly the most experiance with lighting......just my 2 cents

Josh(IZN TRBL) did it to his sunfire as well if I remember right. I think he even posted images on here with so kind of directions on how he did it.

I wasn't telling exactly how I was doing 'em, just giving a sort of "start-up" guide.

I started doing that, but scrapped that idea and went another route.

If you do a search in the Photos/Media forum, I have 2 threads for the 2 ideas that I was entertaining. Search for "LED Tails" -- no quotes.

To my knowledge the only person with functioning LED tails at the moment is John Piparo.

Now that I have a new daily driver, I can focus on working on these a little more.

i cant wait till you get them done rob!!!

as for i, i just did the inner tails. i have not had any time to finish the outers. they will be round clusters with 36 LED's in each taillight.

BUT, i do have a company where if you give me a rough design, i can plot the LED's on a sheet of paper that has grids. i cut the paper out the shape of the taillight where the board will sit into and ship this information off to the company. they will put an LED in each gird i mark. they will make the board, solder all LED's, and cut the board as to how the shape i sent them is. they can make the LED's turn on and brake, and also make them sequential if you wanted. this is not too cheap, but very easy. you make a design, send it off, tare off your stock lens, mount the new board with the LED's already to go, and then mount clear lenses. these already have resisters too, so no blinkers looking like they are on crack LOL.

i am still new to this, and i am working on a custom set of prelude LED taillights. when i am done, i will know what the prices for everything is and will be able to answer any questions. as for now, i am pretty much in the dark 'till i am done building them. when i jump onto my PC, ill find a picture of the test board for the prelude with the holes drilled out for the LED's to give you an idea as to what i am talking about.

^^ Yeah I guess that's me . Making these tails was quite the trail and error experience that makes me not want to do it again. I tried to get all 3 rows to dim during park and to go full bright on brake/blink, and it just wasn't happening for me. So I kinda cheated and just made the bottom row for parking, and the top 2 for brake/blink.

Here are some pics.

Daylight brake/blink

Parking lights..

I had just wired up a 3rd brake light off a VW, works great.

Brake/blink with the headlights on

Reverse lights.

I've been swamped with all kinds of projects and school and work and such for the past while, but I have been meaning to get started on my new tails for a while. It won't take long once I start, but I'm simply going to be dropping in a pair of Infiniti FX 45 tails that I've got sitting here. The way I have my current leds positioned, there isn't any "tunnel" for the light to travel down, so in direct sunlight I'm not too sure they are exactly DOT approved-ish (you can see what I'm talking about in my first picture).

correct me if im wrong but couldn't someone go to autozone or somewhere like that and get some LEDs and fab up their own taillights. im not totally 4sure on how someone could do it but i figure it would be much cheaper that way. i just wish i couldfind some LED taillights for my cav that was affordable for me and looked awesome on my car.

thanks!

It could be done, but would be very hard to do and take a lot of work...

I don't really have a "guide" except for the 2 threads in Photos/Media... its really trial and error as John mentioned.

john, those lights are AWESOME!!!!!
Ryan, let me know your progress, I see you have a sunfire coupe, have a 2000 sunfire sedan, so my taillights are basically the same as all cavaliers, just the lense is different.

I believe the whole kit is the Extreme Dimensions Explosion Body Kit including the rear bumper.

Yes it is the Xplozion kit. Originally made by Aerogear, but there are a lot of copies of it now.
