I remember someone with a Sunfire tried it (possibly ratindahat) and here's more photos. I did a search for t-tops, all forums, exclude replies and popped up with a few posts about people attempting it. I'm not going to get into the argument about what you should do since I still endorse finding yourself a convertible and then making a roof for it (removable or permanent) which would save time and money especially since you could still drive the car while you work on the top and then when you're finished decide whether or not to remove the vert roof.

yes some one has attempted... tip is buy a convertable, get the top of a coupe weld it on, cut out the opening for the removable top. Why a convertable? the verts hve more body strength then the coupes to keep it from twisting as much. same consept but i would DEFENANTLY recamend a roll bar to keep the top off your head in a roll

I am doing this right now. It is a very difficult project. The best idea would be start with a vert. If you have a coupe you can still do it but with alot more bracing. You also need to remove the seam sealer from and weld all pinch welds. If you do not have a very strong fabricating background just change your mind right now. I now people that have been building tube chassis for ten+ years, and they say they wouldnt even attempt it. If you still wish to do it you can wait till im done with mine succesfully and i will help you through as much as you need.

as an owner of both a coupe and a vert.....definitely get the vert to use as a base. from there you can figure out what needs to be done. either get a J roof or since you will be hacking and welding anyway, get the roof from an F body w/ t tops since the weather stripping will be there.

if you are dead set on a targa....well, good luck. ive seen a few people hack up cars and never finish them. here are a few pics from an ex-member (at least he claimed it was his). never finished to my knowledge

and here are some pics posted on the .org a few years back. never heard or saw anything else from this car either

Reasons to use a vert: Less bracing, still able to drive car while working on top, and no pillars (which would look horrible, see blue car).
Reasons to use a coupe: None that I know of.
If you're really serious about this then plan everything out, look over what you can do yourself and what you'll need help with, think about how much time you can dedicate to this project, and keep in mind the cost of everything. Most of the cars that get started never get finished. As ratindahat's case, he sold his car and nobody knows what happened to anyone else who attempted this. Looking through your reg you seem to have the skills needed to use your car but that's your call. If you can do it and pull it off I'll drive to meet you and shake your hand. And if you decide to use a vert I might be contacting you to make me a top. Good luck with what you decide to do.

+1 on the verts. The extra bracing that they have from the factory is especially important to prevent chassis flex.

There was a 2nd gen that was either purple or chamellion at the 2001 Southern Street Machine Association Mini Truckin' Nationals in Pigeon Forge TN. I remember it was about a 92 Cavy and the top looked flawless on it. It even had a reattachable targa if I remember right.

on that green targa top cav, why the hell did he cut the section out of the door as well??? i know for the aesthetic reasons, but if he welded it to the top you couldnt open the door without rollin the windows down or taking the top off and if not then i have no clue.

Maybe they used a vert door and seals on the top.

no they didnt do that. the vert doors have the mirrors connected to the door, but not the A pillar. both those cavs ^^^ above have the A pillar connected to the door. plus the verts dont really have a b pillar. the rear 1/4 window raises with the top and touches the door windows. theres a piece of plastic on the 1/4 window but there isnt really a seal.

nah not good planning. i think if it was ever actually finished that pics would have been posted with the top on, etc. i would wager a guess that someone just hacked the top and never finished it.

I am going to be attempting this with my 01 Coupe parts car... Siince I have a 97 Sedan and 03 Taurus as DDs... It's gonna be a dry weather only/wet weather at autobahn speeds car. If I am succesful, it's gonna get a full size roll cage from Jegs (it's like $200)
