i'm going to paint a section of my tail lights. i was wondering if the back piece is able to come apart from the outer lens. what i want to do is paint the inside of the lens so it's all flush and smooth on the outside. i tried a little to pry it apart but was afraid it would break. if it does how would i go about doing it? just pry it like i was doing?
hmmm. guess i better break out the hammer. it's a good thing i didn't throw away my 99's when i swapped over to 02's. i'll just use the old housings. thanks for the link.
i would think you could bake it off jsut different technique but ive never tried it so what do i know
I may run 18s, but I can do your taxes in 10 seconds flat.

That's the best looking one out of the bunch. I've tried both bake and broil... I've melted the entire housing once.
I've used low heat, high heat, you name it....
Boiled one even.
8 tail lights later, nothing.
yea but i noticed you preheatd all of them. when i did my headlights i cracked the door and didnt preheat, this way it gradually bulit up

Just that particular one... In every test, the center of the lens caved in and the glue (or whatever it is) didn't give... thats how I ended up melting a housing
Also, the headlight lens is thicker, thereby able to withstand heat a little better (those halogen bulbs put off alot of heat...)
Tails are only about 1/8" thick.

I'll second the oven not working well.
Sold 6/30/06.
Kardain.. any suggestions for gettin the broken edges out? alot of it came out when i smashed the eff outta it on mine but i still have some stuck where the lense is glued in and i have no idea how to get it out.
this may sound totally stupid, but what if you wrapped or somehow taped some kind of heat shield around the lens?? and maybe even the housing leaving just the seam between the two open for the heat to affect?? maybe put it in just long enough to semi melt it to where you can pull it apart. then again it may still warp and melt from the inside out. i just might try it anyways. that's what junkyards are for. if i f'k it up i'll just mosey on down and pick up another set.
you can try to tin foil the lens to try and refract the heat back away from the lens or even metal exhaust repair tape and then use some goo gone to remove the glue that may get baked on the lens. the other thing you can try is cooling down the lens some how, with what i dont know. you could always very carefully take a dremel to the lens and then just resilicone it all back together after.
Injection is nice but id rather be BLOWN!

Dremel or a small chisel.
whitegoose, dremel doesn't work . There's not enough clearance to get the cutting wheel in between the housing and lens.
Also, metal is an excellent heat conductor (otherwise cooking pans and what not would be made out of something else)
