Your State Tint law
Thursday, June 22, 2006 4:18 AM
I keep seeing people talk about what they think is illegal, but have you checked yours. Some of you may be riding illegal. Some of you don't care. But, here's a couple of links.

Tint laws #1 site
Tint laws #2

I hope that helps the lazy people and hope that's not a re-post.

yep def dont care

20% is what i want.. 20% is what i get.. legal is 30% here.. honestly i think it also matters more on city.. cuz like here they dont care, tint,exhaust,systems.. they dont care.. (or seem to anyway..)as long as u dont cause much disturbance where they are bothered.. but then again they dont have emission checks here either..

good resources tho.

New York really blows...

Front Side Windows Must allow more than 70% of light in.
Back Side Windows Must allow more than 70% of light in.

i still cant believe NYS is 70% its not even worth it....and i know there are 2 cop cars with the testing equipment in my town. they should make NYC its own state so the rest of NY doesnt get F***ed over like we are now.

definately a good post tho....sticky worthy?

Look at Pennsylvania law

We got it worse then you NY guys.

70% front, back and nothing allowed on winshield.

Here in Cali, we can have the back windows as dark as we want to have them, as long as the front windows allow at least 70% through, and we can have the 4 inch stripe on the top. Also we can have colored tint as long as it is not red, the whole emergency vehicle thing. But the emission laws here are ridiculously tough.

Sorry for the re-post and stepping on your toes Import. Why didn't it make it as a sticky? I see this subject keep popping up all the time.

I also say it depends more on the area and if the cops have anything better to do lol. I personally have never had tint, but my brother has and when he used to live at home (pop. 500) the cops would bother him about it, but when he lived in Rockford (pop. 125,000) the cops didn't look twice at him.

Yeah, Rob. I live in a small town, too. Every law pretty much depends on the cop. Luckily, they seem to be more concerned with DUI and speeding. So, tint and a loud exhaust or radio takes a back seat.

The PA law is wrong on both sites, so take them with a grain of salt. Or better yet look up the actual laws for yourself.

What is PA's law?

I tried searching, but nothing comes up.

Evans- In a nutshell, PA's law is anything on the back three, front three anything is OK as long as you can see inside. I've posted the actual law several times, so a search should turn it up if you need it. Please find it and read it for yourself instead of taking my word for it.

Na your not steppin on anything. I assume it never made a sticky jsut because the tint laws are touchy and are left to interpretation. Most cops could car less as long as you aren't driving stupid. Some cops just like to use it as a way to fill their quota, I know my city has one, most cities may not. My tint shop gave me a letter for the cops if I ever get pulled over stating that I have 35% (legal CT law) and that the light transmission is allows +/- 3% if it was ever light tested. Its just up to the cops in the area to enforce the law. But it always helps to have proof of tint VLT in your glove box, like I do. Just in case

i will say this much in Florida depending on where you live. You can drive around with 5% tint all around and cops won't bother you. My car and my wifes car has 5% on alll back windows and 20% on the fron windows. Knock on wood not ticket and we have had the tint for almost 6 years.

NY is 70% light through the front windows, meaning you can have 30% tint on the windows. For the rear windows i don't think they really could care. I know on my cruiser it came stock with the tint inside the windows at 20% on the rear doors and trunk. When i do my cav i will be safe and get the 30%, basically if you can read your license through the window you are all set here in NY. Unless the cop is a dick. I went to my town hall today and this is what i was told when i asked about the front windows.

Re: Your State Tint law
Thursday, June 29, 2006 6:23 PM
Front Side Windows No tint can be applied legally to this window.

wow, they could get a lot of citations for this from what ive seen here.

Doesn't 30% only let in 30% of the light? After all, 5% is the darkest you can go, meaning that it only lets in 5% of the light (not that it only filters out 5% of the light)...

70% light in, 30% light out. The light that goes out it what allows people to see you inside.

not according to the latest PA vehicle inspector class. its right in the inspection criteria to check window tint for 70% light transmission. and apparantly the law is being rewritten to remove the ambiguity that was created by its weird wording

so even if it is written funny, and appears to be legal if a cop pulls you over...are you gonna switch windows every year for an inspection.....don't think so
