Question about 03+ taillights.
Monday, May 15, 2006 7:48 PM
I've been trying to decide what to do with my taillights, I have an 05 yellow cavy and i'm going for the car obviously staying yellow, with solid blacks for my secondary color. Black windows, gonna take out the orange corner in my headlight, get black rims, but the taillights are pissin me off. Is it possible to take off the bar piece and just put in some 02 black euros w/o lines across the trunk or holes in it? Kind of a nub question but I'm tired or thinkin of it.

I know RKsport has that carbon fiber filler, but I'd rather do solid black right now and save some cash.

your only option is to swap trunk lids and put on 95-02 tails instead. You could always paint the whole tail set like w00tburgers did

yea i thought about that(painting it), but wouldn't i have to re-adhesive it to the car? or did he do it while on the car.

its bolted on by about 10 bolts or so. I'd paint it, only a few of us have them painted, and it looks so great, its pretty unusual.

when I did it i just unbolted the inner light and outer lights, removed, cleaned, masked, sanded, cleaned, primed, painted, cleared, and reinstalled, and they look like they came on the car that way

I painted it the same color as the car, but no, no pics....basically we masked off the round "bubbles" on the outer lights and the reverse lights and painted the rest of the light assembly blue. and no, i didn't use any adhesive, I just rebolted it on and its held up fine for about a year now, no complaints at all

I was thinking about doing this but I'd rather have the look of 02 tails. This is another idea for you that I've been throwing around - mask off the area on the center piece that follows the reflector (not the circle reverse light) from the bottom to the top of the piece. Here's an example on my car:

You can see the line going around the reverese light on the center piece. Masking along that line from top to bottom would let you have the look of 02 tails but keep everything stock (except paint of your choice, of course). But you would have to go the edge of the center piece instead of following that reflector line because then the trim of the outers would be 'wider' than the center piece's edges. The only problem I find with this is the possible unevenness of the surface going from the painted surface to the unpainted surface. Clear would go over the entire piece but I'm wondering if the painted surface would still be higher.

Just something to think about, I hope it all made sense.

I think what Im going to do is take them off and spray tint the whole piece, buddy of mine is real good with spray tint.

Well most people tend to paint the bezel and around the "bubbles" on the lights the color of their car. It looks really good cause it matches. If you were thinking of sticking with the 03-05 bezel, and wanted to go with 95-02 tails, you'd have to buy the RK Sport Carbon Fiber bezel, and then some older tails. The bezel will run you about $120, and not counting the tails. Or you can do what was said above and do a trunk swap to a 95-02 and just put the new tails on them. Then you have to worry about paint matching to your car. Regardless, you are looking at spending about $200+ with either route. Your best bet if you are not looking to spend much, will be to paint the bezel and outer tails to match the car.

Its all good, I tried as best I could.

Does anyone know if the back of the bezel is open to reveal the inside of the bezel or if its all one enclosed piece?

My 04 ecotec has 95-02 caarbon fiber altezzas. I just removed the stocks, added the RK Sport trunk lid carbon fiber trim, and volia....got rid of that big headache...I hate the 03 up tails but, I gots to admit...woots are sweet colormatched.

Your over thinking the painting way of doing this. Believe me its easy, I did mine back in late 03 right after I bought my car I was the first one around my area to do it then everyone copied me so I got Toyota tails instead. Just as said above the center filler pannel is bolted on but its with 7 not 10 bolts. 5 across the top and 2 on the bottom
they are those stupid speed nuts and are a size 14mm, 15mm, or 9/16 all depending on how they were punched out. Once you unbolt it the whole thing comes right off, no adhesive at all. Mask off the circles and prime and paint and clear. Reinstall and there ya go! Yes its just that easy too.

Good luck

Semper Fi SAINT. May you rest in peace.

I'd like to know who at gm decided it was a good idea to use 4dr Sunfire trunks instead of 95-02 Cavy trunks and bolt that thing on instead of just taping it. I would have loved to just do my cb altezzas or toyo tails without filling or swapping trunks.

Maybe there was an overabundance of Fire sedan lids at the factory?
