alright, here is the thing. i live in NY and window tint is a BIG no no as far as cars now. SUV's and mini vans can have it, but when it comes to cars it's just not allowed. (NY is screwed up like that) my question is this. how many of you live in NY and have tinted windows? and how many get harassed for it by the police?

i have a bright yellow '04 cav and i'm tinting all the windows 20% this summer. so i know it's going to stand out. i'm just wondering how many cops will actually pull me over and do something about it.

try the regional forum but theres different tint laws for cars, trucks and suvs. all 3 have their own different laws so check and see what it is for your state. i can tell you right now 20% is gonna be illegal but most cops usually dont bother with it. unless the cop is a dick and wants to pull out a tint meter than i wouldnt really worry about it

same here the limit is 30% but they never bother pulling us over or writing tickets, unless you piss them off. ive had my 20% for about a month and a half and i haven't been bothered yet.

I have had 15% all around for almost a year now and the law here is 35%. The cops here don't care unless, as said above, you piss them off or something like that. But I live in Alabama so I guess they are more lenient down here about the tint since it gets so freakin hot sometimes hah.

Those are the most recent tint laws for each state. All broken down to even what colors are legal. As for Michigan I read that it is any% on the rear windows, 4" on the front windshield. And some wired law that says that the side windows can be tinted any % as long as it starts 4" from the top of the front side windows. Most likely with any state and side window tints they need to make sure that a cop can "see" the drive when they pull someone over, its just a saftey issue.

I have mirror tint on my rear windshield and the small rear windows but nothing on the driver and passenger windows. I've never been asked about it.

thanks. the 20% is 10% too dark i think. but if u guys aren't havin any problems wit cops bein pricks, then i think that it will b ok here. i kno that the tint fine is something like $80 a pop PLUS court costs/surcharges. so it's gonna get costly if they decide to start writin me tickets for it. but i gotta say, 6" in the front is better than the 4" most states allow.

in NY, the fornt windows cant be more than 30%, and the rears dont matter. I had 20% on my camaro and got busted, the ticket was only $75.

It all depends on the cops in your area. I live in CT, some of my friends have limo tints, never busted. One of my friends had 32% instead of the 35% and had to remove it. Sometimes cops have nothing better to do in my city. I got a speeding ticket doing 5mph over the speed limit, lol Thats why when I do get the tints Im just doin 35% but a nice set, I'm going for Huper Optiks, (same company that does bmw tints and stuff) I've seen the 35% done before using Huper and IMO it looked pretty nice, and with a dark interior it looks even darker. So basically when I cop tries to give me a ticket I will tell him to bite me. Oh yea one more thing about CT that I think is good is that you should have the company that does the tint place a "state legal" tag on the window, like on the rear quater window and then tint. My friend had it done on his GTO and when ever he gets pulled he tells the cop to check the tag.
