LED behind fuel door - Fire Hazard? :)
Wednesday, November 23, 2005 12:45 PM
I was thinking of carefully drilling from the trunk to mount an LED or 2 behind the fuel door to get a nice blue glow under there that you can see at the edges when it's closed.

Anyone think this may get someone killed?

I would obviously not have the light on when I'm putting gas in the car, only when the fuel cap is firmly in place.

I don't know...its not worth going out in a gigantic ball of flame...

it shouldn't be a fire hazard if done correctly, but it will look retarded.

Why would it look retarded? If the light was bright enough to actually have a glow ring around the cap, that would kick ass.

there is a plastic line behind the door , id put the resistor inside some where

so that the led was actually getting LOW voltage

i think it would look kinda funny , but im not big into the lights thing either

shrink wrap (heat shrink stuff) it so no metal to ground/spark and i think you would be ok.

to do it correctly, you will want to use a LED housing that has a lens cover, it can be mounted flush inside the fuel door area so that no wiring or electronics will be exsposed to the gas fumes. This will also help diffuse the light so that fewer LEDs will be needed to get a nice even glow.

I use these from time to time.

as far as what it will look like i dunno.... but
as grimor stated, you definatly want to look into a "prewired" led, just so you have a less of a risk of shorting any wire at all.... there are other sorts of led's besides the pictured one above that look, and illuminate better than those do....
technically , the led itself will not cause an explosion, BUT there are always freak accidents, so you never know. Thats why i am posting a disclaimer, so that if you do that, and praying that nothing would happen, but if it did, then there would be no way of implementing me, or possibly anyone else on this forum.

I got mine from http://www.vcclite.com/ there are many options.the LED in the one pictured above is one you just push into the socket of the housing. if you just want a few, you can do a product request and they will send you 1 or 2 free.

Not really sure about the whole concept (except to have light to see at night when filling up maybe?), but to avoid problems, why not run an acrylic rod in there with a LED at the end (in the trunk), and keep any electrical completely out of the gas door altogether?

i would put silicone or hot glue gun the led where thewires are.. as long as there is insulation u shouldnt have any probs creating a spark

Why not a lite pipe, or at the very least, A grommet where the LED stays in the hole you drill and heat shrink the first 12 inches of its wiring in the panal, just incase.

Its not the gas you really need to be worry of, its the fumes.

Yeah, I'm thinking of keeping the LEDs as far back as possible with super-protective coating. Not sure if I'm ever gonna do this mod, I've got quite a few LED projects ahead of it...
