CF Hood off for winter??
Sunday, November 20, 2005 7:47 AM
Im thinking about taking mine off for winter, this is the first winter Ive had a CF hood on a car. Its not the salt that Im too concerned with because I can keep it washed off and waxed enought to where I dont think thats gonna be an issue, but the gravels (chat) that they put down to get traction thats what concerns me with possibly scratching the piss outta my hood. So do you all take yours off?? or leave it on and if so do you have any scratches or dull spots from the winter and cold? Im in the south by the way our winters are nothing too major but they are obsessed with salt around here when it does snow lol. Thanks in advance!

Leave it on!
I plan on leaving mine on...Personally im lazy...and secondly i plan on keeping the car clean so im not too worried....just stay a little farther back from cars when the salt is down. I also plan on leaving my rims on.....I keep my stuff clean, plus i hate cars with stealies...they deserve to die.....why take off ur rims because snow is on the ground that pisses me off.

It's clear coated just like any other hood....ever noticed surface damage before with previous hoods??

if you're concerned about it, just swap your stock hood back on (if you still have it that is). that's what i did. i paid enough for my hood not to want anything to happen to it this winter.

You're a complete dumbass. Let me enlighten you.

-most modern rims are aluminum, salt eats aluminum like none other, despite whether they're cleared or not, you still could have chips that are vulnerable to corrosion
-most people with aftermarket rims prefer performance tires to go with them, in such instance these "performance" tires are not made for snow unless you like being at risk of losing control and wrecking your car with the possibility of others
-people such as myself put steelies on in the winter due to the ease of finding cheaper yet great tires for now, example 14" Bridgestone Blizzacks
-winter is not about looking good, it's about being safe and prepared for what conditions you may face throughout it.....if you're so concerned about keeping your wheels on and looking good, maybe you should buy a beater and store your prized Cavalier

i personally would take off every aftermarket thing done to exterior. if possible.

if u have a stock hood, put it on.

never know when ur gonna hit that patch of ice and rearend someone.. god forbid of course.

one less thing to worry about daily.

^^ thats exactly what I thought when i first read it thats why I never even acknowledged it.
And also cf hoods are not clear coated the same as clear coat on paint its a gel coat. I was just tryin to make sure that I wasnt over reacting or over preparing for winter and that others were doing the same thing and or had prior experience with their cf hoods and winter conditions.

Maybe I shouldn't have called you a dumbass, but to say my car "deserves to die" and for you to be pissed off because I play it safe in the winter is pretty @!#$ dumb.

Sorry theres just idiots around my town that piss me off...and just the other day we were fighting over this....I dont know, i keep my rims cleaned and waxed. After it snows and if they put down salt i get the car wash imediatly....dont worry about the dumbass comment....i could care less and take no offence....Idk....I have falken year round Zeix performance tires.

But then again Joe if I had a car as beautiful as yours i would probably swap out the rims too.

Sorry I took offense, but I was trying to explain why the majority swap.

No big deal, and thanks bro, nothing wrong with your car!

im glad you too could kiss and make up just messin with ya JoE. Personally i would take the CF hood off, im a little bias though cause my buddies acura CF hood was left out in good ol michigan winter last year and seemed to have warped slightly from the cold. Ive herd of this happening before but never really seen it caused by extreme cold. Also i would run on steelies as well. You can pick up a set for DIRT cheap and will have NO worries about messing up you nicer wheels.

Sorry for the ignorance....but is it that bad for the rims? This is the first winter with rims...and i dont want to messs anything up. I always thought people took them off just because thier too hard to keep clean. Should i be a hipocrit myself?

yes it is a FACT that the street salt will eat/corrode aluminum and chrome. Pick up some steelies, no use rockin your nice wheels in the winter.

Re: CF Hood off for winter??

Yea it WILL affect your wheels, with my LS wheels the outer lip is still chrome and I didnt want the salt to get under the paint and eat it away where the paint ends at the lip so mine are off and my winter wheels are on and I took the hood off today while it was somewhat warm today supposed to get cold and rainy/snowy rest of the week haha the car looks funny now but Id rather be safe than sorry I agree with cannon fodder's statement 100% I paid too much for that hood to raise the risk of scratching it to death and or dulling the finish. but yea adicted Id look at some winter wheels whether it be steelies or some stockers either way it never hurts to protect a little.

::Crys like a girl::

You guys are right...its not worth f'n up rims i clean every day. Not to ruin ur thread...even tho it has almost become a chat. But where could i get some stealies? the junk yard? How much should i pay for them....with even crappy tires? I didnt realize how bad it was for your rims.

Id pay no more than $50 for steelies anything more than that is a rip off in my opinion you shoult be able to find some very resonable at a junk yard thats where Id look first.

well new(if you found a set) would probably be more than that but if you can find a set of used thats not bent or anything like that then you might as well get them and save the money, just call around some local junk yards tell them what youre looking for and see what they got and who has the best deal and go see what kinda shape theyre in before you buy them and without tires get some BFG Blizzacks those are some damn good winter tires. What happen to your stockers?? Shoulda kept them!

Yeah well...I sold them to my friend for $500 with damn near no tread left. Stupid i know...but i dont think too far in advance....

I took mine off already. My stock hood like like crap (used it as a dropcloth for my painting projects, people jumping on it) but I could care less. Just so long my CF hood looks good in the spring.

I could probably get you a steelie for $20 with a nice tire.

Re: CF Hood off for winter??

Nothing stupid about making $500 off of them with bald tires!

I did a similiar thing, though I bought stealies from another Cav owner with snow tires for only $100.

Looks @!#$ty in the winter yes, but I made some money, have better tires for snow, and it makes me appreciate my car that much more when spring rolls around.
