stripped headlight bolts
Thursday, October 27, 2005 8:39 AM
i have a 2003 ls cavalier and changed the head lights the other day and i noticed that the outside bolts on both lights were stripped and the headlights were pointing down instead of straight out. i was wondering if anyone else had this problem and if so what they did to fix it. i was thinking just having a bolt welded to the underneath of the frame where the bolt is but i was hoping to find an easier fix....if anyone knows something that could help plz post.

i got the same problem,

put a piece of weld over the hole, then re-drill and tap the hole.

thank you sir. it seems that the outside holes are the only ones that strip....you would think gm would use thicker metal or atleast weld a bolt to it at the factory.

i just tap'ed the hole bigger and got new bolts. much easier. you dont have to bust out the welder even though that would be more fun.

I also had the same problem just stuck a bolt under it and tightened that sucker down.

I found a set of speed clips that work for them. I don't remember what the clips were off of....but anyways they happened to pop right in where the old hole is and were the exact same size as the original thread. Sorry i can't remember what i got them off of. I think they sell them at advance auto....if i can remember maybe i'll take a picture of what i did.

LOL zip ties hold everything. My neons as well as my front speakers are mounted with zip ties. Quick and easy and no one will ever notice.

well i guess everone has the problem ..ya me too i ended up using a tap and die set and re did the holes and used stainless steel 5/8" bolts works great! (lockwasher/washer aswell) but you could just use a smaller bolt and trun in upside down and face it upwards in the hole and nut it down? might be a tight fit on your hand good luck...

wow, glad to find out i just didnt f--- it up, and thats its a common problem.. I planned on just taping the whole bigger and gettin a tad bigger bolt.. I might just do the nut thing tho.. might tac weld the nut underneath so i dont have to worry about dropping that..

My Sunfire headlights have the same problem. I might have to try the bolt trick and see if that works.

Nice idea with the zip ties, I'll go pick up a few and use them with that white wall trick at night to line everything up properly.
