Is it legal to remove third brake light?
Ya know, this is funny. I was going to ask the same thing. I'm getting a spoiler that has a 3rd brake light on it, so I don't need the one in the back window. Do I just take it out of there, or is it ok to have 4 brake lights? lol
It may vary from state to state. Generally, all that is required is the left and right brake/tail, so if that is the case in your state, no it is not illegal.
Exodus, since you are getting a spoiler with a built in 3rd light, remove the one from your window. 1 high-mount looks 100x better than 2.
Well, in my back window, its mounted down. i can remove it though, do I need a new back panel or something thats flat? I don't even know the exact name for it . . .
I believe that any car that came with one must have one. I think the law went in maybe 15 years ago or so saying all cars made after a certain date must have one.

^^^^ yup what Weasel said. But i had my spoiler on, and just disconnected the one in the back window and used the one on my spoiler. Haven't had any problems with the police.
In Pennsylvania there's absolutely nothing at all about the third brake light in the state's inspection and vehicle code manuals. I even asked my teacher when I got my inspection liscence about it and all he said was there isn't anything in the books saying you need to have it, it just says a left and a right one.
Holy SHHHHH=OOOOT. Thats just nuts, $180? I'll just disconnect the damn thing or leave it on for more lights, lol.
I cut the wires going to the one in my rear window and routed them to my spoiler...

Yeah...I now have all of my lights working, including the rear window one, even with the spoiler light there. I wasn't driving the car, but the guy was pulled over and that's what the cop told him. Course, at that time I didn't have my licence, so I think he ran the plates and came up with a reason to check if I was driving.
^ umm your car should already have the wiring for both the interior one and the exterior. the few i've looked at have already. mine included.

SO EVERYTHING!
my 99 didn't have the wiring there in the back deck, im assuming because after 95-96, i think the spoiler came standard on all sunfire coupes, i bought a nice little led brake light on ebay and mounted it on my rear deck, it works and its different
I was wondering if I needed to do any wiring for my new spoiler but I realized my trunk already had the wires there, just needed to plug them in. I'm not sure if I'm gonna keep my third light or not, if I don't, I'll just get another rear deck out of a junked Z24, cause they already have the rear deck with no third light right?

I like this idea, I think I'll do that, LOL
