which spoiler
Tuesday, October 25, 2005 7:26 PM
ok i know i am going to get a lot of crap about this one. i want a spoiler that exactly does what it is designed to do, apply downforce. however, i don't want a tacky 24" high wing. maybe a low mid wing. any ideas

nothing is going to apply downforce unless you are going to be going 100+ mph, wings are pointless. if you like the way it looks thats a differnt story but as far as function well there not.

only one i can think of no matter how much i hate it would be the prostock wing

Re: which spoiler

i prefer the boeing 747 wing over the prostock. you create more lift w/ it

Actualy a wing starts to work around 60. And it doesn't need to be big either. The spoiler on the rear of a 70's era Camaro or Firebird applys about 200 lbs of down force at 60 mph. I'm just wondering tho why do you want down force on the rear of a front wheel drive car?

Re: which spoiler

the point of a spoiler is to put downforce on a car keeping the front end down therefor creating less wheel hop, basically on our cars a spoiler isnt neccesary untill u have around 300hp then the car will get so much wheelhop ull actually need a large spoiler to keep the front end down....
Re: which spoiler

^^^umm, i dont think so dude, down force means downward force on the REAR of the car, there fore it would put weight down on the back which could cause more wheel hop i would think

maybe im wrong!?

Re: which spoiler

I just figured a spoiler on a FWD car adds some downforce and adds some weight making for slightly better traction. Just my thought though . . .
Re: which spoiler

But hes talking about down force on the rear not the front. Down force on the rear would tend to lift the front.

Re: which spoiler

^^^^ correct, thats why you have a front spoiler for, to give down downforce on the front tires. A rear spoiler is basically for looks on a fwd car, BUT at high speeds it does work by aplying down force on the back which helps prevent the rear end of a car from becoming loose. So a rear spoiler would only be needed on a race car (that turns). My spoiler, just for looks.

Examples of front spoilers

no actually have u guys ever watched NOPI drag races?? notice how all the cars have wheelie bars at the back and a huge flat spoiler thats 1 ft out of the back of the car? thats the create less wheel hop on the front end, doesnt matter if its FWD or RWD when u ahve enought HP and are going at high enough speed it will keep the car down to the street more. but on a car that doesnt have over 300hp its for looks pretty much
Re: which spoiler

All from Nopi's web site. Notice only one FWD car has a rear spoiler, and its basically flat.

Re: which spoiler

More pics from nopi. Again only the last cobalt has a rear spoiler, and its flat. BUt he is also running a 7.9 ET
I was under the impression that a flat wing is to reduce turbulance by smoothing out the air flow, not add downforce.

Re: which spoiler

well thats what i was under the impression its for, is to reduce wheel hop... i might be wrong but i never seen a FWD car have wheelhop with those on
Re: which spoiler

the wheelie bar is what reduces the wheel hop. Obviously a FWD car is not going to do a wheelie. But it does is slightly lift the rear end to drive the front wheels into the ground.

Re: which spoiler

An FWD car doing a wheelie that wouldn't last long! The wings are just for looks
if your getting wheel hop at speed then you have a bad ass car my friend. Either that or somethings very wrong with it.

im not sure about this but would it help stabalize the car or whatever with more downforce on the back since our cars are front end heavy?

lol. i didn't think that i would get so many replys. and yet none had any ideas on which ones. just agured about the idea of a wing. i the main resaon i ask is that i am putting a new trunk lid with 00-02 tail lights on my car and my brother wants my 04 stuff and spoiler for his 96. i did find one wing that looks pretty good that may work at hwy speeds. i was also thinking about front spilters or some thing. and guy the basic shape of any car is an air foil ( airplane wing). and a a good wing may reduce drag and improve fuel econemy.
this is the 3d-gt or gt-3d it varies. there is also a carbon fiber one too.

why not if not that then what. i like thr touring wing that is on the cavy that is in all the bomex pics. what is the name of that one

Re: which spoiler

^^^ I think your refering to my old car. Since it seems that you really want a spoiler get the rksport touring wing like I had. Its pretty low and its very good quality.
