first off, i'll give you guys a little background information to help slim down a selection to what i might like, and I can go from there.
my last car was a '76 mustang, which I had dualed out from the headers back to flowmaster exhaust to chrome side pipes
(loud, looked good, ran great!)
since then, i've gotten rid of the ol' mustang, and now have an 04 cavalier. it took me a LOOOONG time to become attached to this car, and the mods done to newer cars.
i like the way a nice chrome muffler looks. I don't know much about "cans" on newer cars... I don't like the "bees in a can" sound I hear a lot in hondas.. and I would assume flowmaster would give me the sound i'm looking for, but don't make a chrome "can" that I want..
I've heard a lot of good things about magnaflow (performance/sound) but don't know if they have the look i'm after.
I've seen a car that had a huge chrom can that was angled up and towards the side a little, but I doubt that would look good with my stock bumper.
I don't have the money right now to do a full exhaust/catback setup... so I figure I could buy/pick out a muffler for myself as a christmas present from mom :p <don't flame me! lol >
i'm a poor college student right now.
also, would I have to modify/cut my bumper to make it fit? would the exhaust shop do that, or would I have to have a custom shop do that? would this void my warranty?
Thanks for all the info guys!

when i first got exhaust i bought a muffler had a shop weld it on no cutting of the bumper there's plenty of room (unless you got the ls sport kit, will need some cutting depending on the tip) i got a otto racing muffler love the sound, almost on 3 years now (after 6 months i did upgrade to 2.5 cat back using the same muffler) no raspyness, no bees and such.
Thanks for your reply! I plan on doing the same thing you did (eventually do a 2.5" catback). Good to know I don't need to cut the bumper.
Which model of the otto racing muffler did you get? I'm browsing ebay and there's quite a few from the dual-rolled-tip to a huge flared tip with optional silencer

Magnaflow muffler and 2.25 piping is the best sounding exhaust IMO for a J, hands down...

i have a silverline, and its alright. Not as loud at idle as i'd like it to be, but i'm a loud person , so i'm sure everybody else appreciates it. lol
I would buy and 40 series flowmaster. They make a nice smooth tone also pick up a decent size resonator (bigger than stock if you have one already) Then just find a tip that looks good I guess. The exhaust shop will be able to bend up some pipe to make everything fit your bumper.

This may help you out some.
Here is a video of my 04 Ecotec with an intake and just a cherry bomb glasspack and a MAGNAFLOW muffler.

Here is a video of the same 04 Ecotec with the same intake and glasspack , and a rice rocket, fart cannon , coffee can , rice launcher , tin can .. etc etc muffler.

jersey kid thanks for the videos ...
I like the sound of the magnaflow better!
Earlier someone suggested a resonator ... you say you have a "cherry bomb glasspack", are those the same things/different names?
What size do you have? 14"? bigger?
Also, I don't know of any reputable places to buy this stuff from, i'm browsing ebay for prices right now. I guess it'll be right under $100 for the muffler, how much does the res/glasspack run?
Thanks for the info guys, very helpful!

i have dual mangaflow XLs with camaro tips. stainless. look at my sig
this is the muffler im using with custom pipes
its all preference, bro. i've got a dual exit magnaflow setup with 2.25" piping. sounds great.
resonator and a glasspack are technically the same thing. i'm pretty sure a glasspack is a muffler but used for the same effect as a resonator. it just smooths out and quiets the sound while deepening the tone.
Blown.
Don't buy a powertech. I bought one and even though it says "it will never rust" it did. Nice sound and no complaints other than the rust on the end of the tip.

The magnaflow muffler sounds good, but in my opinion Borla's ProXS muffler sounds better. ive owned both and i like the sound of the Borla more. either way you go i think you will be happy.
