I just recently bought myself a 95 Cavalier coupe and before ever liscencing it (yet) I got the body all done and painted with a base/clear coat. Now my question to you guys is how long after the new paint job can I wash, buff, wax the car? I tryed searching this and I couldn't find a sensible answer anywhere. I got my car back on friday and I was going to wash her tomorrow which would be wednesday so that would be 5 days later... is that alright? What do you suggest?
And also, If you could give me a suggested list of what products to pick up (assuming they can be bought here) that'd be great! I already have a few things like Simoniz car wash gel, Mothers california gold car wash & Eagle One Wax As-U-Dry... but for all I know this stuff might be crap.
That wax as you dry stuff is okay, but it would be better to just wax the car. I've always been told to wait at least one week to wash the car, and a month to wax it. For really good car care stuff, I would stick with either Mothers or Meguiars Gold Class
Correction, I meant to say 30 dyas to wash it, and 90 days to wax it. Even if the paint shop used a bake booth, the paint still need plenty of time to cure.
you have to wait a month or so before you wax it
But wash it as much as you can, good to keep crap off the paint, and if you see bird crap, get it off right away!!! the acid can really harm paint w/o wax
I've been told 6 month before you wax it, it's the guy at the paint shop who told me that when I did my trunk. Don't know exactly..
anything from griotsgarage.com is amazing. thats the stuff that classic cars and ferrari owners use. my dad uses it on his vette and it is better than meguires. he wont use anything else on it.

you can wash it as soon as its done being painted like the next day. you have to wait for the paint to fully cure to wax which is usually 6 weeks
you can wash the car the next day , waxing fresh paint it depends was your car painted in a down draft with baking booth?? or was it painted in a cross draft???
now i know that ppg when it is baked at 140 degrees using the speed clear 2042 after cool down which is a hour you can sand and buff it wash it and then wax it
if painted in a regular booth the next day wash it wet sand it but do not wax it for at least 30 days
but in the mean time i would use a polish to keep the shine up
can i haz bondo
i was told at least 6 weeks
Im a Xbox 360 fanboy...and damn proud of it!!
i was told 30 days only wash with water, no soap, and wax after 90
slowly but surely...
I got my car back 2 days after it was painted. and when I got home I washed and waxed. It was painted with a booth, if that matters, but the paint still looks wicked, and its been a while. So i say do it whenever u want

unless you really like having it repainted i would wait 90 days for the wax and a month on the paint. it sucks when you don't. it cost my friend a good fortune to have his redone.
when you do waxx it, wet sand it first.......
wait for it... wait for it... NOW GO!! ---> '02 LS Sport <---

GAH!!!
IF you get bird crap or something on fresh paint... you can wash it off with water, MAYBE a mild detergent. it's best to not use soap or whatnot for about a month after just ot be safe.
Waxing... also best to wait for 90 days to be on the safe side... unless you don't mind paying to get it repainted IF something goes wrong.
Remember... with cars it's always better to be safe than sorry.
Bake booth or not... it's ALWAYS better to be safe than sorry.
I wouldnt wash it for a month or maybe 2 months bc if you wash it now the paint will still be soft and it will come off easly and as for waxing i would wait either 5 or 6months after the paint job is done so the paint is fully bonded to the surface or its completely dry.

Well i worked in a body shop for a year and we would wet sand, rub out, wax and wash cars the day after they were painted. Also we offered a lifetime warranty on all work and NEVER had a problem unless we messed up and burnt through paint or something.
Jeremy
yea but at the same time you are not supposed to add excessive wax residue to the paint untill it cures, in most cases it's 6weeks - 3 months depending on what kind of paint and what stage it was. Yes wax can be applied, No don't put it on till the paint has had time to fully cure. It's sometimes the $hit you can't see in the paint that makes the finish look like crap or dull or spider webed.

But the SHOP did the waxing (and most body shops that DO wax after fresh paint NORMALLY use a special wax) and the SHOP guaranteed the work...
DO NOT WAX for 90 days after fresh paint!!! MUCH better to be safe than sorry
ok..i too work at a bodyshop and its ok to wash your car the next day ....but waxing is not good until 90 days....and when you say a shop waxes it you are probably refering to water sanding and buffing with a buffing compound then using a polishing compund to remove swirl marks. DONT WAX YOUR CAR FOR 90 DAYS AND USE A SOFT RAG WHEN WASHING WITH SOAP....washing is ok with soap..trust me we wash all our cars before we deliver them to the customer..

Well, my car was painted in a garage, and NOT a paint booth/bake shop. But it still came out nice I must admit.
I did wash the car after but that's was all I done... I'm trusting you guys!
I'll try and get some pics up if I can but I never took any yet cause it's hasent been very sunny out.
Another question: When is it safe to have decals put on my car? I'm a big fan of decals so I was gonna get something put on it soon but maybe I shouldn't do that yet, I dunno?
If it was done in a garage wait a month to six weeks to wax it. That should be long enough to allow the paint to cure properly. If you want to be completely sure call the company that made the paint and ask them.
As far as the decals go I would wait till the paint has finished curing before applying them.

Not to be ignorant... but there were a few AUTO BODY/PAINT techs in this thread that did say to NOT WAX FOR 90 DAYS!!!!!
well u know if you tryed to wax it after the paint I am pretty sure your paint will either come off easly or it will burn right threw it.

I work at a body shop, and my dad owns a body shop, you can wash the car as much as you want as soon as the clear is dryed. Every car we paint we wash it when were done. Waxing doesnt matter either, but i prefer wetsand and buffing instead. Everytime you wax you take a small tiny layer of paint off!!! hopefuly this helps and not to sound cocky but i know im right! ha ha
