can someone explain the difference if there is one?
after ready the "Why HID are illegal" thread i am a bit confused.
also are the Ebay projection headlights okay to buy?

Comparing the two is like apples and oranges...
HID stands for High Intensity Discharge. It is a style of light bulb (as opposed to incandescent, for example). Instead of a coil of wire (filament) which glows when current is put thru it like a 'regular' incandescent light bulb, it uses a ballast and a funky bulb to produce a LOT more light. I don't actually know exactly how HID bulbs work (weren't really that common when my electrician workbooks were written... weren't covered that well... LOL)
HID bulbs are much more powerful (in terms of light output) than regular bulbs. Much much brighter.
Projector headlights use a lens to "project" the light from the light source, instead of reflecting it like a regular bulb.
You can use regular bulbs with a projector lens, but for most applications the light output won't be bright enough to see much... especially if it's raining out. If you go with the projector lenses off Ebay (which I do have on my car), you'll want to consider a HID kit for them, simply so you can see the road.
I've heard that HID conversion kits were made illegal by the NHTSA.. but I do see them for sale on Ebay as well, once in a while. The place I bought my HID kit from (www.misterjung.com) is gone.

hmm.. so i need to get the projection headlights and then an HID kit.
would just wiring up higher watt bulbs do the trick for Projection lights?
is there anyother kind of after market headlight to make my cavy look more stylish. i have a 96 headlight. i think maybe just even the later 90's headlight might fit mine. they have the clear lens as oppose to the textured i think.

yeah that was my first appeal to them but i don't really feel like buying an HID kit for $250+ too. is there a brighter bulb that would suffice in it other than HID?

hey sean. you could purchase a set of OEM projector headlights such as a benz, bmw, or infinity that already have factory hid kits and ballasts and such, then retrofit them into your stock housing. they wont be cheap, but it will be the cheapest way to receive projectors with an hid kit. shoot me an email and ill get a hold of a local guy here who sells only OEM projectors. ill get some prices for you and see if any of the appeal to you. other than that, i dont think your gonna find a way to receive hid brightness and a projector look at the same time. good luck with your search.

From what I've seen and read, the HID conversion kits are not illegal, however, they do throw a lot more glare on the road if the light isn't baffled properly (I had considered one for my GA GT and now my Alero). I don't remember specifically if the Sunfire headlights have a baffle (or shroud) but I'm pretty sure the Cav's do. A baffle or shroud is basically the black piece of metal that shades the lightbulb.
Projectors use a fish-eye lens to spread the beam wider, but I'm not really impressed by most of them because, as Lenko said, they throw a very dim light on the whole. If you can cram in an HID bulb and find room for the Ballast, peachy, but otherwise, I'd stick with Silverstars or something of the like that throws a very white light.
Anyhow..
Lenko: you would have learned about HID if you learned anything about flourescent lighting... instead of a long tube, you have a very short one, and the energy is pulsed much much faster.
