malibu trunk struts on a cav
Tuesday, August 09, 2005 7:51 PM
I was looking at a new malibu today and was wondering if anyone had ever tried to put the trunk hinges with the gas strut on a cavalier. I tried to find a pic of the malibu but couldn't find one.

Yeah! I was just thinking about this a week ago. I thought of using the hood struts that Jason was selling on the GP and mounting them in the trunk. It would be cool if the trunk opened all the way, not just pop a little. If anyone get this going then let me know. Or I might just have to start it.

J-kub, I'm still not seeing it. I have an 04 and my trunk opens all the way.

My 03 trunk lid just kind of "pops" open, but does not go all the way.

Would probably be a pain to install the struts and make it all work, though. They may also get in teh way when you are trying to put a large object (body, etc) in there.

Really?!?!? Messed up. Mine pops like 2", my friends pops like 0.5". When I got my hands full and I press the alarm button to pop the trunk, I want the thing to open, not just pop up.

Mine used to open all the way when I removed the stock bezel and put the RKsport CF one on, but now it's weighted down again...

I'm with J-Kub - when I hit that button, I want to see sh@t jumpin!

Ok you guys added weight to it. See you didn't say that at first, then that could be a problem. The springs in our trunk are adjustable have you tried that yet?

I didn't add weight to mine. It just has the factory Sunfire spoiler, the power trunk release, and the big black sunfire trunk bezel for the plate.

Dude I can't even put a body kit on - you think I know how to adjust a spring?

Just keep me in the design studio and out of the mechanic bay and your car will be just fine!

BE CAREFUL WITH THOSE DAMN THINGS!!! Ouch! One of them ripped a chunk of skin off my hand when it snapped down - wasnt expecting it. Use pliars.
I had to move mine because somehow they were in the wrong slot (maybe from the factory?) they werent actually in one of the slots, instead, resting on top of the top slot, and they kept creeking every time I opened the trunk.

Cavalier and Fire convertibles had gas struts factory that simply bolt into place. They are not at nice as some of the more complex trunk struts and they do hang down into the trunk space just like the factory 'swing arms' but they are struts nonetheless....

the hinge that I saw had a kin of scissor hinge with a gas strut, not the tension bars under the rear deck. I've looked all over the internet and can't find em. I'll just get some pics of her car and show you what I mean.

I was adjusting mine and fowled it up Turns out I popped the rod that actually pushes the trunk arm out from it's spot, and with a spoiler and 2nd gen phase 2 taillights, the thing is damn heavy on only one spring

My tunk lid is motorized by 6" linear actuators. The gas shocks are the same idea, it involves a lot of playing to get your pivot points right so it goes up high enough and still closes tight. Unfortunately you will spend quite a bit of time trying different spots.

I thought about trying some struts/hinges off a newer Jetta. They don't go inside the trunk at all. And they seem to work great for the Jettas, so why not our cars right? Later, Jay
