so give me your guys opinion... how difficult do you think this is going to be? how dumb is it, or how cool could it be?
at the end of the month were making t-tops on my cavalier.
its very hard and requires alot of work. the whole roof has to be re-enforced and alot of other work. ratindahat did it on his sunfire
i recently bought ratindahat's sunfire.
there is definitely a ton of work involved in doing this. i can try and post some pics of the t-tops when i have a chance.
I thought about the t-top b4. I decided against that and have decided to do a targa top. I know it's gonna take a lot of work but when I'm done it will look bad@$$.
I'm not gonna do it though for about another year or so.
targa top is even harder lol thats what he tried first but couldnt get it so he settled for the t-tops
I'm gonna make it work and I want you to hold me to it!
Doesn't your car door have the upper window frame?
If you are talking about T-tops that don't come out, that might be alright.
I think with the frame on top of the window will make T-tops look strange when you remove them.
Who knows though, maybe it will look sweet after it's done, I'm just not too sure.
If you put in T-tops be prepared to get a wet ass evertime it rains. I know I used to in my Firebird god does it suck!

I bet his olds wasn't running low 11's either. I tried replaceing the weatherstrip and still leaked. one of the reasons I no longer have that car. Just to much hasle thats all.
But Good Luck

I love the whole t-top idea, I thought about doing it myself. I say do it, I think it will look gorgeous on a Sunfire, and its something different no ones has it! Just keep in mind its a lot of work to do it right, and once its done, its done. Good Luck
!!!
LOL Bolt good point those cars are sweet. Just telling my experences with them thats all.

I love those cars, '83 & '84 Hurst Olds. I had an '88 Cutlass Classic with T-tops and I never had a leak, unless I went through a car wash. To solve that problem I didn't go through car washes. I don't really understand what the speed of the car has to do with T-tops leaking.
Zero, the problem with it doesn't have to do so much with speed as it does torque.
My big block had over 550hp at the wheels and over 600 lb ft of torque. With That much torque in a unibody car like a Firebird that already flexes. The pass side rear squats and the drive side front trys to come up this twists the car like you would wring a towel. I didn't have a roll cage to tie the body together so it twists fairly easy. for example had I ever put slicks on that car and came off the line in the converter at about 3000 RPM the car would have flexed so bad it would have busted the windshield and destroyed the car. They were designed to flex but not that much. It would have twisted the body and never have been able to be straightened back out. If you look it some Hot Rod magizines or watch drag racing you'll see what I mean. Sorry rear wheel drive cars drag racing. This is why my T-Tops never sealed right. I know a cavalier could never
do this to itself but the whole T-Top experence for me wasn't that good so I was only relateing what I had gone thru. Others in lower hp lower tq normal cars should never
have as big a problem. But remember when you cut yur roof your inviteing water in.
Hope this clears it up for you but if you have anyother questions feel free to ask.
Good luck if you should decide to do it tho.

Plenty of people have thought about doing t-tops in the past and so far I don't think anyone got further than just thinking. I saw some pitures of ratindahat's sunfire and I'm guessing it just became too much of a hassle and got rid of it. I'm still pitching my idea around and might try it one day if I ever get time. Take a convertible and make a hardtop for it when the top is down. It'd take some innovation to get it to work right but then you could do what you wanted with the car be it targa or t-top. Or just take a wrech conv., remove the top, build from there. It all depends on money.

no ratindahat did successfully do t-tops. his goals was a targa top but after tryin' forever, he settled on t-tops

The 84's are pretty darn close to the 83's. Main differences were a slightly different production run, (as soon as I find out the exact, I'll throw it up in the "other cars" forum) and the inverted paint scheme from the '83. Both run the 307, 4 speed auto, LSD rear. Both should have Lightning rods, T-tops I believe were an option...
Stock 307 would run low 15's to low 16's.
Back onto topic, while I do agree that T-Tops would be a good idea, I think that the cost involved would make the project a bit too much of an undertaking. However, if you do manage to pull it off, post them pics
