Car broken into, to shave or not to shave?
Thursday, July 21, 2005 12:21 PM
Last weekend my Sunfire was broken into and raped of it's audio goodies. They pounded in the driver's side lock into the door to unlock the door, and demolished the trunk lock as well. So my question is this --- Will it be cheaper to shave the door locks/trunk lock/handles and put remote openers/poppers, or should I try to get ahold of gm to try to get locks to match my existing keys? Also, they gnawed up the hole in the plastic trunk piece on the outside; do they make a carbon fiber one to replace that, with reverse lights?

Damn dude - sorry to hear that.

GM is gonna rape you any way they can - I would go ahead and do the shave now if thats what you were planning to do anyway.

Yeah, RKsport makes a CF piece that will cover that area. GM's gonna charge you like 400-500 bucks for a new rear bezel.

If your not worried about being DOT approved... shave away. If your are, I wouldn't.

Definatly not do NOT buy CF from GM, u will regret it for a long time. As everyone here already knows the dealership will charge u up the ass for parts. Shaving is a cheap and easy way to get looks and a theft deterent at the same time. Bring it buy a body shop or even a buddies house and do it for less then $150, then buy the remote poppers and have then installed (roughly 350-450). Overall it will be better then spending 7-8 hudnred U.S on door handles

lol just cuz you shave the locks, doesnt mean it wont stop them from breaking a window to get in. if someone wants it bad enough, they'll get it

Yeah i know they can still break into the windows, that's common sense. It'll cost me around 200 bucks in materials and a kit to shave both handles, the two door locks, and the trunk lock. I can just fill the hole for the trunk with something and fiberglass over the whole deck and just paint it. I'm also going to get an alarm with a pager that goes off in the event of a break-in, so that'll help too.

its 280 for the rear bezel on the 03+ cavies I would think the sunfire would be less.

for the rear trunk bezel on an o3 sunfire it's 540$ from the dealer, that is for the stock panel. any carbon fiber piece i have seen so far for the trunk piece has been a stick on cover.

Man that's brutal for that trunk piece. Ima just weld in the metal hole, fill it in where the keyhole is in the stock bezel, then lightly body filler over it.

nice thing about replacing glass you dont loose your car for a week or 2 in the body shop waiting for work to get done

windows take a few hours at the most to replace

id save the locks , but leave the door handles , more so if you ever plan to race the car
