I bought a new spray gun and wanted to know the best way to clean it after painting.
Anyone out there use a paint washer? I didn't get any instructions with my spray gun but was thinking lacquer thinner to clean it. Is that correct?
I just poor paint thinner in the cup and squeeze the handle, letting gravity pull some thinner through it and just hang the gun up with thinner inside.

You can use thinner or the reducer that you get when you mix the base coat with. I just use the reducer because i have it from spraying the base
buy a thinner from a paint shop. the crap at home depot will not work and will be a major headache to try to use. i bought a gallon for 5 bucks at the paint shop.

I am glad Viper said something about using paint thinner from Home Depot. It had crossed my mind and wondered if it would work. This is my first paint job so lots to figure out. Also using the reducer is another way to go. Thanks for the great suggestions.
Lacquer thinner... I wouldn't use basemaker (the stuff you mix your paint with)
i am very picky about my guns, i tear em` down each time i use em and clean and clean
with thinner of course
can i haz bondo
reducer doesn't work as good it aint as potent
dont soak the gun in thinner you can ruin the rings and sh*t
Not paint thinner, lacquer thinner... like every manufacturer recommends across the board.

never ever ever ever leave thinner in a paint gun, over time it will pit and corrode the inside of the gun, just a warning
I was told that acetone will clean up the gun better than a thinner will. I got that from the person selling me the gun.
I use lacquer thinner. Paint reducer is too expensive to be wasting cleaning out a gun. After many uses, you can tear apart the gun and soak it in a gun cleaner like klean strip overnight. But some of the seals may need to be removed when soaking the gun, as they can swell up. If you are talking about the gun washes you place the gun in to clean it out, they are nice, but unless you paint everyday, I don't know if the expense would justify buying one. Paint thinner won't work to clean out the gun. Its not a strong enough solvent, and will curdle the paint and make a real mess. Been there done that.

i was always told in school it is best to tear it down after you done each time now inbetween spraying different colors i just put some thinner in it and spray like im painting kinda gives you a high lol but i wouldnt recomend just spraying it threw you never get all the paint out plus you might want to buy a paint gun cleaning kit cause your gonna need everything in it eventually to get the best life out of your gun depending on the brand (develbliss, sharp, and so on) cause they are expensive but tear it down and clean it all dont leave too much thinner in it cause it will ruin your seals sorry about spelling

gunwash? thats what i use.phil
I guess we all do things a little differently. I want to wait for cooler weather before I start using the spray gun. By then should know what works best for me. Thanks for giving me some great ideas.
