Blacking out tail-lights
Monday, July 18, 2005 9:17 PM
I couldn't find a tutorial on how to do this in the FAQ, so I guess I'll ask now and hope not to be flamed. :-)

I'm looking to black out my tail lights on my 00 cavi. I hear there is a type of black film to put over the housings themselves, and that there's also a type of spraypaint. I'm looking for something not to perminate, so the film thing would be ideal. Does anyone know where I can get this and exactly what I need to do? Or if there is no such thing as a transparent black film to stick on to these lights, how does one go about doing this exactly?

The whole film thing...I believe it's the same film that you use to tint windows. That might not be so easy to take off if you put it on with a sticky enough adhesive.

If I were you, I'd buy the black background euro lights OR if you really don't like euro lights, buy a spare set of stock tails, paint or tint them...if you like them, put them on and save your stock ones, if you don't like them, atleast you know that it doesn't look good and not stuck that way.

I hope that made sense...I'm a bit tired...

find VHT NiteShades. Its a spray on tint. film tint i doubt will come out too good, but if you dont wanna do spray on tint, i guess you could try baking the film tint on to get a good fit. never tried though, so not positive

Spray tint is your best bet! After you spray the tint make sure you throw a clear coat on the tail lights. The clear will make the tint last longer. Remember the more coats of tint the darker the tail lights. SO I would recomend doing both lights at the same time so you get an evern coat!

Good luck and post pics!

use vht, and some clear or wax of some kind to shine them up... u could really easly go to the junk yard and get a spair set of tails incase u dont like it or mess up. I think the vht comes off though with some paint thinner really easy before it sets up

Ok, thanks for all the input guys, it was really helpful. :-)

I'm contemplating whether or not I should just go with some chrome euro tail lights, or to do this spray tint thing. My cavi is a dark navy blue (factory color) so I guess I'll try out the spray tint, and if I hate it, I'll buy some euros.

i spray tinted my tails with VHT Nite Shades. looks sweet imo. dark during the day and when those lights come on at night, they are still visible with the brakes on, so still legal i suppose. you can see them from 60ft away.

couple pics...

Wow, that looks awesome.. So how much spray should I use on these? Maybe go over it lightly once or twice, or should I spray the lights until they are completely black and hope that you can still see light out of them?

Only do 2-3 LIGHT coats. It looks great but if you do anymore than that it will probably be too dark. The VHT dries flat black so you probably want to put a few coats of clear on there to shine them up like the rest of the car. It looks really good on a dark blue car. Oh and one other thing if you want your reverse lights to be functional I would tape them off so you don't tint those otherwise you wont be able to see anything out of them when backing up.

Instead of worrying about messing up the reverse lights why not just remove tails and paint them away from the car?

i did mine with 2 coats and then 3 coats of clear, they look pretty good. wait a month after you paint them and then wax then a couple times, you should be able to get them to be shiny smooth like stock
