How To PAint??? And which gun to buy???
Sunday, July 03, 2005 12:39 PM
I know this is pretty broad topic. But i really wanna learn how to paint.. and eventually do body work. I just bought a new bodykit for my car and i would like to atleast try to paint it myself. Im pretty sure it wont come out great i just want to try.. Its urethane and its already painted. I just want to know
Which steps in order to get the old paint off to painting it the new color
which grit sand papers? from start to finish ect?
All info would be great cuz im really a rookie at this. some may say this isnt the way to go but i have nothing to lose ive taught myself everything else on my car i want to learn to paint So my first mission is this front bumper atleast also i will need a gun i already have a compressor
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=26228&item=7527089688&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW

is that just some cheap gun?.. it seems that way to me can omeone point me in a good direction for a gun? it will be my frist gun and just for very small jobs so nothing too fancy is nedded. My dad does autobody but he lives in south dakota and i live in cali he told me to go with the gravitional feed or w/e gun. Any responses would be great thanx in advance!

Doin the same thing right now. To get the old paint off, use 100 grit sandpaper, all you have to do is get through the clear coat, then you can spray over the basecoat....that is the extent of my knowledge thus far...

100 grit is too rough to spray base over. 180 maybe if you plan on priming it.

320 to 400 is what you want to use to get the base down (or the primer if you prime it) Just remember Primer is primarily a scratch filler used over bare metal, plastics or body work. A sealer is always nice before you put on your base... helps promote adhesion. You really dont want to use a finer grit because it may affect paint adhesion.

As far as a gun... gravity feed HVLP is the way to go. Sharp makes some good guns for learning on... and down the line if you wish move up to something better.

No offense, but you don't know what you are talking about and are giving out the wrong info.

Listen to this guy, he's an actual auto body tech too and that info right there is correct. And as far as guns, Sata makes the good stuff, but its kinda pricey.

if you're gonna keep spraying for a while might as well get something good so you dont spend money then more money on something better. i have 2 satas, one of them a digital two, and an iwata gun that i use strictly for clear and nothing else. i use an older sata 95 for sealer.thats at least $1,400 in the first 3 guns mentioned (if bought Brand New). that should give you an idea of how much you would might spend ( goingg new).

fallen angel you beat me to every paint related reply, lol. Anyways this is very tru, 320-400 is perfect for base sanding. I have been using the Sharp T1 Titanium gun over the past few months and it is VERY NICE, good price too. check it out.

Sharpe Finex ™ Gravity Feed Spray Gun
Description:

A line of affordable spray guns for automotive refinishing from Sharpe, "The SPray Gun People."

Be the envy of other painters with our new Finex™ conventional gravity feed spray guns. Finex™ guns are lightweight, featuring great gun balance and performance at a fraction of the cost.

Designed for budget-minded painters who won't settle for less than Sharpe quality. Backed by Sharpe's trusted name and a full one-year warranty, Finex™ is the easy choice.
Internet Price: $79.95

The best starter gun I've seen, and a damn good price.

As long as you get a High Volume Low Pressure gun (HVLP) most all of them are decent, some made cheaper then others. I have also seen a Sharpe 3 gun kit for starters for around $100.

Wow thanks guys. You surely put a smile on my face!! I try to be of as much help as possible... even though there is a certain person on here who doesn't think I know anything and took the time out to email me during his ban to let me know that... I just laughed at it really.

OneBadZ24> That's because I LOVE painting. Anytime I see a paint post I jump on it because it's my favorite thing to do!

John Piparo> it's all good It's not the first time someone has assumed I was a guy lol. Really now... how many auto body/paint CHICKS are on this site really??

lundis> That def put a smile on my face!! Thank you!!

Kross, How about a link to the site that you pull that quote from? I've seen you (or someone else) post that description twice and no link. All I can find is the Sharpe Finex Mini for that price, but the name of the gun you list suggests that it's not the Mini, or is it. Thanks.

Sorry bout that, I guess I just figured you could find it in a search.

The one I was quoting is a conventional gun for starters, it is not a mini.

*AHEM*
of course i could give me advice but why should i even bother, everyone on here thinks she is god`s gift to the automotive world right??? and i am a complete dumb ass
dude painting is something learned over time not something you pick up over night, i personally would go down to the factory e-coat/sealer fix and chips / dents, primer i would dry block the primer with 150 re prime wet sand with 320 then 400 then 600 prep the panles with a wax and grease remover, tack it off sealer base clear
but hey why listen to me, after all i am a dumb ass

can i haz bondo

I did find that one, but because of your last paragraph ("As long as you get a High Volume Low Pressure gun (HVLP)...") I thought you found the HVLP version for $80. My fault for not noticing you were talking about two diferent guns.

big daddy> maybe if you didn't come off like an arse most of the time and gave helpful advice instead of belittling people and making them feel like total crap for wanting to learn something... more people would respect and listen to you. I told you that over the reply I sent to you. Think about it. Let's say you don't know crap about computers except for how to turn it on and surf the web and check your email. You make a post on here asking someone what is wrong with your computer because you keep getting error messages and you can't do certain things... and if people constantly told you that you were stupid for not knowing that and asking and paying a pro to do it... wouldn't that get to you?

I've never claimed to know everything there is to know about auto body and paint... no one does. You should know that in this profession you're constantly learning new things... new products come out... new methods are developed... etc. Everyone has to start somewhere to learn ya know? Be more mature and helpful... and people would be more willing to listen to what you had to say... you'd be surprised how well people accept your opinions and advice when you're not belittling them. Belittling people by telling them things like you did me (like calling me a "stupid effing (word that rhymes with bunt)" and saying your 9 year old knows more than me and you wouldn't let me fix your toilet) only yields negative responses. If you want to help people, explain things to them and respect that they want to learn, and share your "knowledge" with other people instead of putting them down.

Yeah, sometimes I just don't translate from brain to keyboard very good...

But for a starter gun, a conventional should be fine to get the strokes and spray distance down.

Thing I have seen mostly with mistakes is people think thicker is better, spray a little thin 2 times rather then thick as shyte one time, eventually you get used to each pass being close to perfect.

I know a few people that work at GM body shops that won't use HVLP still...

But, that falls under my "teaching old dogs new tricks" thing, they just won't change it up any.

I think someone needs a piece of ass...

Oh...and it help if you press the Enter key on the keyboard...its next to the apostophre key...it seperates what someone else quoted, and what you typed. Kinda convient when you don't have to read a post 3 times to figure out where it begins.

Just my advive....*cough*advice

big daddy... you need to stop referring to me as "the god of automotive field"... I don't come on here begging for respect and to have people listen to me. I try to help and offer advice when I can, if they listen fine if not oh well.

I'm not the one that comes on here acting like I know everything and like I'm the "god of the automotive world"... you're that one that does that. I have never once came on here and said I know everything. You're the one that puts people down because they "don't posess the knowledge" you do. Just because people actually listen to and respect me doesn't give you the right to talk to and about me like you do. Respect is not handed out... you have to earn it. If you want people to respect you and listen to your advice... stop acting like a child and bashing people.

*ahem*

anyways... this needs to stay on topic... sorry to the author or those who had questions.

And thanks again to everyone who had the kind words... made this gal smile
